About The Position

The City of McKinney is seeking an Environmental Health Specialist or Senior Environmental Health Specialist to conduct health and safety inspections, enforce health and food safety codes, and perform plan reviews for commercial food establishments and public swimming pools. This role is crucial for investigating and tracking the causes of food and waterborne illnesses and ensuring compliance with health regulations. Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of Thirty (30) semester hours combined in Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacy, Physical Science, Food Technology, Environmental Engineering or other related science.
  • Texas Class C driver's license.
  • Professional Sanitarian registration through Texas Department of State Health Services at the time of application.
  • Ability to obtain Texas Department of Agriculture Noncommercial Pesticide Applicators License within one year of employment.
  • Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
  • Must pass a drug screen and background check.

  • Knowledge of health and safety standards applicable to food handling, storage, and preparation.
  • Knowledge of maintenance and inspection of public pools and spas.
  • Knowledge of mosquito control methods.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Skilled in applying established testing procedures for extracting food and water samples, as well as the use of sampling and testing equipment.
  • Ability to calculate decimals and percentages; perform mathematical equations with fractions; ability to calculate surface areas, volumes, weights and measures.
  • Ability to utilize a personal computer, copier, iPad, calculator, fax machine, thermometer, chemical test kit, test papers, and other technical devices.
  • Meet the City's driving requirements.
  • Ability to obtain necessary continuing education units to retain certifications.
  • Frequent ability to apply principles of persuasion and influence.
  • Ability to build professional relationships with internal staff and external clients.
  • Ability to work in a team environment; contribute as a team member and treat co-workers, subordinates and customers with respect.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine health inspections of commercial food establishments and mobile food units.
  • Enforce ordinances and conduct re-inspections.
  • Provide education on safe food handling practices.
  • Implement the Hazardous Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) approach to the food protection program.
  • Investigate complaints and resolve customer inquiries.
  • Assist in surveillance efforts for current health topics and ensure the use of effective techniques and procedures.
  • Inspect temporary food establishments, which may require a rotating weekend schedule.
  • Respond to emergency situations outside of normal working hours.
  • Make recommendations to public and private industry representatives on modifying operations to comply with health codes.
  • Maintain environmental surveys and records of inspections and actions taken.
  • Prepare documentation and represent the City in court cases and hearings if necessary.
  • Review plans and specifications for commercial food establishments (restaurants, grocery stores, daycares, etc.) and commercial swimming pools and spas.
  • Assist with the development of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate work activities with other federal, state, or local agencies.
  • Assist with the mosquito abatement program as needed.
  • Prepare, process, and issue health notices.
  • Maintain all relevant certifications and required continuing education units.
  • Comply with all written City policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to assigned work schedule.
  • Provide technical assistance to architects, engineers, contractors, and business owners on health, safety, and code requirements.
  • Enter inspection results using an iPad and IG Inspect and IG Enforce Applications.
  • Work with and update files.
