About The Position

In support of occupational health and safety, environmental protection and emergency management for The Jackson Laboratory, incumbents are responsible for developing, organizing, administering, monitoring and evaluating one or more assigned programs to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations, sound safety and health practices and state of the art systems through benchmarking and other data collection methods; provides specialized technical expertise and serves as the contact for assigned area(s); plans and administers training programs in assigned area(s); prepares reports to management, regulatory agencies and professional associations as required.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of environmental health & safety as would normally be acquired through attainment of a Bachelor Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Public Health, Environmental Health, Environmental Sciences, or related field such as chemistry or biology with at least one year of progressively challenging and successful professional experience in environmental health & safety or an Associates Degree in a related field with at least three years of progressively challenging and successful professional experience in environmental health & safety.
  • Written and oral communication skills sufficient to permit clear and effective exchange of information with people across a wide diversity of disciplines and levels of sophistication.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks on a regular basis.
  • Ability to wear respiratory protection (maintain a clean shaven facial surface).
  • Ability to become professionally certified in area(s) of responsibility.
  • Knowledge of applicable regulations for area(s) of responsibility such as federal OSHA, Cal/OSHA, and NRC regulations, Maine DOL/BLS, DHS and DEP standards, CDC regulations, CalEPA, and NIOSH/NIH guidelines.
  • Ability to interpret federal, state and local laws, and implement compliant programs to meet established requirements.
  • Ability to revise and present existing training programs.
  • Ability in problem solving; recognizes and analyzes needs and assist in the development of programs to address needs.
  • Ability to perform basic safety audits and inspections in areas of expertise as required by policy, standards or regulations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others verbally and in writing to clearly exchange information effectively with people representing a wide diversity of disciplines and levels of sophistication including officials at all levels of government.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel is essential.
  • Judgment sufficient to recognize limits of responsibility and defer decisions to appropriate management levels/personnel.
  • Ability to use multiple technical applications including word processing, database management, spreadsheets, web software, graphics and presentation software, email and other office technologies.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to serve on Confined Space Rescue Team and HazMat Response Team.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, and administers environmental health and safety programs.
  • Monitors and evaluates effectiveness of such programs.
  • Conducts safety inspections throughout the Laboratory to identify and correct potential safety issues.
  • Establishes standards and procedures to ensure compliance with federal, state and local safety regulations and with Laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Maintains current knowledge of, investigates, and interprets federal, state and local safety regulations.
  • Advises senior management based on this interpretation.
  • Develops and conducts employee and student training programs for assigned area(s).
  • Responds to various requests for assistance by JAX personnel to facilitate sound safety and health practices.
  • May oversee training development and delivery by lower level environmental health and safety personnel.
  • Researches and documents SOPs and other safety related materials as needed.
  • Researches occupational safety information to assure the best available methods and equipment are adopted to minimize the hazards in the work place.
  • Responds to emergency situations involving hazardous materials, radiation, confined space rescue, fire/smoke incidents as pertains to fire and/or safety.
  • May prepare reports of findings and submits recommendations.
  • Works with federal, state and local agencies in course of carrying out responsibilities.
  • Participates in professional activities and maintains active memberships in one or more professional associations in area of expertise or related safety, environmental and emergency management disciplines.
  • Other duties as assigned.
