As an Environmental Engineering Specialist with the Department of Environmental Protection, you will play a vital role in reviewing applications that shape the future of water quality across the state. Requirements

  • Successful completion of the training program for Environmental Engineering Trainee (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration)
  • One year of professional experience in environmental engineering, and possession of a valid Professional Engineer license issued by the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists
  • Two years of professional experience in environmental engineering, and possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists
  • One year of professional experience in environmental engineering, and a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering or in any engineering field that includes or is supplemented by 9 credits in environmental engineering
  • Graduate study in environmental engineering or in a closely related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate PennVest, National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System, Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems, and Part II permit applications for technical accuracy and compliance
  • Develop effluent limits and prepare supporting documents based on water quality standards
  • Work with municipalities, agencies, and specialists to address permit requirements and program needs
  • Conduct site visits to assess facilities, verify construction, and support application evaluation
  • Create technical reports, draft permits, deficiency letters, and supporting documentation
  • Maintain records, complete system entries, and support tracking of permit activities
