About The Position

Ergon Asphalt and Emulsions, Inc. seeks a full-time Environmental Engineering Manager to join our Pavement Coating & Resources team. The Environmental Engineering Manager leads and manages a team of environmental engineers responsible for environmental permitting, regulatory compliance, and environmental support of capital and operational projects across a nationwide asphalt and emulsions manufacturing footprint. This role provides strategic direction, technical oversight, and people leadership while partnering closely with Operations, Engineering, EHS, and Corporate leadership to manage environmental risk and support business growth. The Environmental Engineering Manager serves as a key link between corporate environmental strategy and site‑level execution.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive environmental engineering experience in manufacturing or industrial environments.
  • 3+ years of experience leading or managing technical professionals.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing permitting and compliance across multiple facilities.
  • Advanced knowledge of environmental regulations applicable to asphalt, emulsions, chemicals, or heavy industrial manufacturing.
  • Strong expertise in air permitting and multi-media compliance.
  • Proven leadership, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and environmental management systems.

  • Experience managing environmental programs in a decentralized or nationwide organization.
  • Experience supporting large capital projects and M&A activities.
  • Familiarity with asphalt plants, emulsions production, terminals, or bulk materials handling.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Environmental Engineers (Engineer I, II, III).
  • Assign workloads, set priorities, and ensure effective coverage across facilities and regions.
  • Provide coaching, performance feedback, and career development guidance.
  • Support hiring, onboarding, and succession planning for the environmental engineering team.
  • Foster consistent standards, technical excellence, and collaboration across the team.
  • Provide leadership and oversight of environmental compliance programs across all manufacturing and terminal locations.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations, including: Air quality (Title V, synthetic minor, NSR/PSD), Water programs (MSGP stormwater, wastewater, SPCC), Hazardous and non-hazardous waste management.
  • Review and approve compliance strategies, corrective action plans, and responses to regulatory findings.
  • Oversee responses to regulatory inspections, audits, notices of violation, and enforcement actions.
  • Evaluate enterprise-level environmental risks and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Establish and oversee permitting strategies for existing facilities, expansions, and new projects.
  • Review and approve complex permit applications, renewals, and modifications.
  • Ensure permitting needs are identified early during project planning and operational changes.
  • Serve as an escalation point for regulatory agency interactions and negotiations.
  • Monitor permit conditions and ensure facility-level implementation and accountability.
  • Provide environmental leadership for major capital projects, plant expansions, equipment installations, and process changes.
  • Partner with Engineering and Operations to integrate environmental requirements into project design and execution.
  • Support environmental due diligence and integration activities for mergers and acquisitions.
  • Balance regulatory requirements with operational and business needs to support growth and efficiency.
  • Allocate environmental engineering resources to support priority projects and initiatives.
  • Develop, implement, and improve company-wide environmental standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Drive consistent implementation of environmental programs across a decentralized, multi-site organization.
  • Analyze environmental performance data and metrics to identify trends, risks, and improvement opportunities.
  • Support sustainability, ESG, and corporate environmental reporting initiatives as applicable.
  • Promote best practices and continuous improvement across the organization.
  • Act as a trusted environmental advisor to Operations, Corporate EHS, Engineering, Legal, and executive leadership.
  • Communicate complex regulatory and technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Represent the company in industry groups, regulatory meetings, and professional forums as needed.
