About The Position

The Environmental Engineer is responsible for managing environmental permitting, compliance, and project support for assigned asphalt and emulsions manufacturing facilities. This role serves as a key environmental resource to Operations and EHS teams, ensuring facilities comply with federal, state, and local regulations while supporting operational and capital projects across the company's national footprint. This position works independently on routine matters and collaborates closely with plant leadership, corporate teams, and regulatory agencies to mitigate environmental risk and support business objectives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • 3–6 years of environmental engineering or compliance experience in manufacturing or industrial settings.
  • Experience supporting multiple facilities or a geographically dispersed footprint is preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of environmental regulations affecting asphalt, chemical manufacturing, or heavy industry.
  • Experience with air permitting and/or water and waste compliance strongly preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to translate regulatory requirements into practical operational guidance.
  • Ability to travel approximately 25–40%, depending on facility needs and project scope.

Nice To Haves

  • Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience working directly with regulatory agencies.
  • Familiarity with asphalt plants, emulsions, terminals, or related materials manufacturing.
  • Experience supporting environmental aspects of capital projects or acquisitions.

Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day environmental compliance for assigned facilities, including air, water, waste, and spill prevention programs.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulations such as: Clean Air Act (Title V, minor source, NSR), Clean Water Act (MSGP stormwater, wastewater, SPCC), RCRA hazardous and non-hazardous waste requirements.
  • Maintain compliance calendars, records, and reporting schedules.
  • Lead responses to internal audits, regulatory inspections, and agency inquiries.
  • Identify compliance risks and develop corrective and preventive actions in coordination with site teams.
  • Support environmental incident response, investigations, and reporting as needed.
  • Lead preparation, submittal, and management of environmental permit applications, renewals, and modifications.
  • Evaluate operational and process changes for permitting impacts.
  • Coordinate technical data collection (emissions, throughput, equipment changes) to support permitting efforts.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for routine regulatory agency communications related to permits.
  • Track permit conditions and ensure operating requirements are communicated clearly to facilities.
  • Provide environmental support for capital projects, plant expansions, equipment installations, and process changes.
  • Conduct environmental reviews to identify permitting or compliance requirements early in project planning.
  • Support implementation of best practices and standardized environmental procedures across facilities.
  • Participate in environmental improvement initiatives, including emissions reduction, waste minimization, and operational efficiency projects.
  • Contribute to environmental data tracking and corporate reporting initiatives.
  • Act as an environmental advisor to plant managers, operations, and maintenance teams.
  • Partner with Corporate EHS and Engineering on environmental strategy and risk management.
  • Mentor Environmental Engineer I staff and support training and knowledge transfer.
  • Communicate regulatory requirements clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
