About The Position

This role supports plant personnel in developing, implementing, and sustaining Health, Environmental, Safety, and Security (HES&S) programs to ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and OxyChem requirements. The position provides safety leadership and environmental compliance expertise while supporting daily production and maintenance activities. Over time, proficiency is expected across all HES&S disciplines. Ludington offers a unique blend of professional opportunity and outdoor lifestyle. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering or a related field with environmental experience.
  • 3 years of HES&S regulatory and program experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate across teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the site expert on safety procedures, with emphasis on the 5 Key Procedures.
  • Interpret applicable laws, regulations, permits, and Oxy procedures and apply them to site operations.
  • Integrate HES&S requirements into work processes, procedures, and guidelines to ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Develop competency in fall protection, life‑critical guarding, fall arrest systems, and scaffolding.
  • Support regulatory permitting, emissions reporting, wastewater monitoring, solid and hazardous waste management, and sampling/testing programs.
  • Obtain and maintain required permits, licenses, and exemptions, including Title V, UIC, RCRA, NPDES, and MI Part 5.
  • Manage WERCS environmental approvals for site chemical changes.
  • Develop and deliver environmental and safety training.
  • Communicate HES&S requirement changes and ensure effective implementation.
  • Develop and maintain compliance systems, tools, training, and coaching resources.
  • Lead contractor safety oversight, including Safety Activity Plans, JSAs, tailgate meetings, and scorecard requirements.
  • Mentor the site contractor safety representative and co‑lead annual contractor performance reviews.
  • Actively participate in plant safety meetings and develop safety topics as needed.
  • Conduct and participate in corporate and site HES&S audits and self‑assessments.
  • Lead and support root cause investigations and corrective action processes.
  • Support management of change (MOC) reviews for HES&S and plant modifications.
  • Coordinate regulatory inspections and responses to agency inquiries.
  • Serve on site and corporate HES&S teams and initiatives.
  • Participate in the Site Emergency Manager on‑call rotation (~5 weeks/year).
  • Support Food Safety and Quality Programs in compliance with FDA requirements.
  • Model and promote excellence, empathy, and accountability in HES&S behaviors.
