About The Position

The Environmental Engineer works for the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), whose mission is to implement federal and state regulations that protect human health and the environment while allowing environmentally sound industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activity. IDEM issues permits, inspects and monitors regulated entities, provides compliance and technical assistance, assesses environmental quality, enforces compliance, and responds to spills. This position conducts high-level engineering assessments of Reasonably Available Control Technology applications to identify cost-effective emission limitations for sources in ozone nonattainment areas classified as moderate or higher. It provides technical support during rulemaking to ensure limitations are federally approved into Indiana’s State Implementation Plan and are permanent and enforceable. The role also leads Regional Haze planning, including source selection for four-factor analyses; visibility and back-trajectory assessments; review of monitored, modeled, and source-apportionment data; and preparation of Regional Haze State Implementation Plan elements for Indiana. The position performs technical engineering reviews, permit reviews, inspections, investigations, sampling, and reporting. It may prepare or review enforcement documents, advise enforcement staff, attend hearings, and testify as an expert witness. The role also responds to the public and other stakeholders, represents the agency in national associations, contributes technical comments on proposed regulations, and serves as project officer for certain grants. The role requires travel on most workdays to inspect, audit, examine, survey, or investigate regulated entities and to write reports at those sites or the employee’s home. Employees report to the agency office for occasional meetings or events. Work hours may vary daily or weekly to meet operational needs. The position is exempt from overtime compensation; employees may work more than 75 hours per pay period without additional compensation and must report at least 75 hours per pay period of work and/or paid leave to receive their base biweekly salary. The role may be used in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs. The salary traditionally starts at $75,010, but may be commensurate with education and work experience.
