About The Position

This is professional engineering work focused on protecting and improving air, land, and water resources to ensure a clean and healthful environment. Employees in this class work under the supervision of a higher-level officer but are expected to operate with minimal supervision. The role involves examining and evaluating plans and specifications for environmental engineering structures, systems, and operations. It includes participation in or indirect control over technical aspects of environmental engineering activities such as air pollution, food and milk control, general environmental sanitation, housing, industrial hygiene, institutional hygiene, ionizing radiation, rural and recreational sanitation, shellfish sanitation, solid waste disposal, swimming pools and bathing beaches, vector and rodent control, wastewater collection and treatment, water resources, and water supply. The position also entails planning and conducting detailed environmental engineering field surveys and studies, utilizing educational methods to gain acceptance for environmental control procedures, and providing technical assistance to the public, officials, industrialists, architects, and consulting engineers. Additionally, it involves consulting with subordinate engineers, acting as a lead worker, assisting in legal actions, and developing and administering major environmental engineering programs, including budgets and reports.

Requirements

  • A Master's Degree in the Engineering field, related to Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Sanitary Engineering and one (1) year work experience.
  • OR A Bachelors' Degree in any of the above related fields and three (3) years related work experience.
  • Knowledge of environmental science and engineering concepts, principles and practices as they relate to pollution prevention, control, and environmental conservation.
  • Knowledge and skill to assess the impact of the agency's activities on public safety, ecology, and environmental involving matters directly or closely related to public welfare and protection of natural resources.
  • Knowledge of other related engineering and science disciplines.
  • Knowledge and skill to adopt and apply engineering technologies, practices, and methods in evaluating engineering plans and drawings to solve numerous environmental problems.
  • Knowledge of methods, procedures, and purposes of investigations, sampling and analysis.
  • Knowledge of federal and territorial environmental laws and regulations.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

Nice To Haves

  • Incumbent may be required to obtain a scuba diving certificate, six (6) months after employment with agency.
  • Possession of an Engineer-in-Training certificate, or eligibility for the Engineer-in-Training Certificate with certificate to be obtained within one (1) year after appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Examines and evaluates plans and specifications for environmental engineering structures, systems, and operations.

  • Provides technical assistance and advice to the public, public officials, industrialists, architects, and consulting engineers.
  • Consults with subordinate engineers and acts as a lead worker to other professional and clerical personnel.
  • Assists in the development and presentation of information for legal action.
  • Develops and administers a major program in the field of environmental engineering, including the preparation of plans, budgets, and reports.
  • Performs other related duties as may be required.
