About The Position

The SCA Environmental Education (EE) Specialist will assist the Refuge with many activities that connect the local community and provide the candidate with prime career experience. Activities include but are not limited to: planning and presenting environmental education programs for a variety of audiences, leading guided walks for public audiences or school groups, using verbal and written communication to effectively engage the local community, developing or revising curriculum based lesson plans, designing flyers and creating social media content, and assisting in the operation of a Visitor Center. The candidate will also gain training and certification to teach youth outdoor skills like fishing, archery, and kayaking. These experiential learning opportunities will be hands-on, engaging, and will utilize resources in the local community and environment. The duties of this position will support Refuge goals through presenting programs, fostering partnerships, co-teaching, and leading.

Responsibilities

  • Providing curriculum based environmental education lessons to K-12 students
  • Assisting with the Philly Nature Kids repeat based environmental education program for 4th graders at partner schools
  • Planning and presenting interpretive programs for public audiences including guided walks, guided shuttle tours, nature-based crafts, etc
  • Facilitating outdoor recreation programs including archery, fishing, kayaking
  • Designing flyers and creating social media content
  • Assisting with daily Visitor Center operations
  • Planning and preparing for special events
  • Engaging with local community members in Southwest Philadelphia to deepen relationships at community events and meetings
  • Assisting with biology and maintenance teams including habitat restoration and trail maintenance
  • Attending community meetings
  • Assisting with offsite community work including at community gardens
  • Working with volunteers
  • Other duties as assigned
