About The Position

Oak Ridge National Laboratory has multiple openings for an Environmental Data Science Engineer to apply advanced data science methods, tools, and techniques to the design, development, and implementation of data-driven solutions to help link advanced informatics and computer science to data management and distribution in Earth and Environmental sciences in support of DOE’s science, energy, and national security missions.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Science or related field
  • 1.5 years of full time, post degree experience developing scientific data management tools to manage a large volume of sensor and other sources
  • Experience with frameworks such as D3.js, ExpressJS, and Node.js
  • Experience with Java 7/8, Spring Boot, Webservices, and Python
  • Experience developing geospatial web tools for advanced visualization and real-time data analysis
  • Experience working in a DEV/OPS research environment
  • Solid understanding of source control using Git or a similar version control systems
  • Experience applying big data technologies such as Cassandra, Spark, GraphQL, or others to analyze large and diverse environmental data
  • Proven background in real-world computer programming applied to ecological and environmental science applications
  • Familiarity with High-Performance Computing (HPC)
  • Demonstrated applied knowledge in databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL
  • Demonstrable knowledge in programming languages such as Java and Python
  • Good communication skills in English (both oral and written)
  • Desire to learn and adopt new tools and technologies as required by the projects
  • Willingness to travel 3-4 times per year to national conferences

  • Apply advanced data science methods, tools, and techniques to the design, development, and implementation of data-driven solutions.
