About The Position

Under the guidance of the Project Manager, the Environmental Data Analyst will provide data-related energy and water conservation support to NASA’s Langley Research Center (Langley). In addition, this position will provide the practical expertise necessary to ensure that our customers are in compliance with applicable laws, NASA policies, Executive Orders, and Langley’s energy and water goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, computer sciences, data science, mathematics, or equivalent fields related to utilities, energy/water management, and/or engineering.
  • Minimum of 4-5 years of related experience within energy/utility management, environmental data analysis, data analytics, or a combination of related fields and duties as described above.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including transformation of raw data into summarized formats.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and utilize tools such as Power Bi, SharePoint Lists, and online reporting software.
  • Strong technical writing skills.
  • Able to work independently and show a high level of initiative and attention to detail.
  • Consistent character and do not yield to pressure to compromise or cut corners.
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively with superiors, colleagues, and customers by clearly expressing your intent and understanding the focus and purpose of the conversation while allowing each person to get their point across.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in energy metering, monitoring, and analysis tools, with general familiarity with platforms such as Energy Star Portfolio Manager, PI Vision, or EnergyCAP.
  • Ability to perform basic programming, such as Excel macros, Power Automate, and other usage of Microsoft VBA.
  • Experience using GIS-based tools, building automation applications and systems, metering data interfaces, and creation/manipulation of energy/utility dashboards.
  • Knowledge of HVAC, lighting, industrial plant equipment (e.g., compressors, pumps, cooling towers, chillers, etc.), mechanical systems, and energy management.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize various data management tools and applications to perform data entry, quality control/assurance, verification, analysis, and reporting.
  • Provide support in utility and industrial electricity billing management, including review and extrapolation of billing data.
  • Collect, calculate, review, and analyze trends in utility energy and water utilization data (with and without meters) at a campus-wide level and for individual industrial facilities.
  • Identify and interpret patterns, trends, and correlations within utility, energy, and other data sets, including key metrics, such as cost, consumption, and reduction. Use data visualization and reports to communicate and explain findings.
  • Examine equipment, facilities, and operations, such as wind tunnels and other industrial facilities, and provide data visualization and consultation on opportunities for improving energy and water efficiency.
  • Champion continuous improvement in customer’s operational performance while providing suggestions on meeting potential anticipated future optimization and efficiency requirements.
  • Assist with preparing training, marketing materials, and other outreach to broaden knowledge of energy/data management topics and services both internally and externally.
  • Provide technical and administrative support to various customer stakeholders, efficiency strategies, and initiatives.
  • Update energy management and efficiency planning documents.
  • Prepare agendas, presentation materials, handouts, and notes for quarterly, annual, and ad hoc meetings attended by varying levels of management.
  • Support the team and customer with the integration of or transition to new environmental data platforms, such as EnergyCAP, Hazardous Materials Management System (HMMS), etc.
  • Support the team with ad hoc data requests, including spreadsheet creation or data cleaning for training attendance, deliverable deadlines, permit data, and other environmental data needs.
  • Assist with the identification, development, cost estimation, implementation, measurement and verification of savings for energy efficiency and water conservation projects and initiatives.
