About The Position

The City of Edmonton is seeking a highly motivated Environmental Coordinator to join their Environment and Climate Resilience section within Urban Planning and Economy. This role provides crucial support to assigned client business areas, ensuring the effective management and maintenance of the organization's environmental management system (Enviso) in accordance with the ISO 14001 standard. The Environmental Coordinator will collaborate with technical, environmental, and engineering specialists to achieve environmental objectives and targets, and will be responsible for planning, supporting, and coordinating activities to maintain and continuously improve the environmental management system. This role also involves executing processes, procedures, and controls to ensure environmental compliance and investigating and identifying environmental issues.

Requirements

  • University degree in Sciences (Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Geoscience) or Engineering (environmental); OR completion of a recognized two-year diploma program in Sciences or Technology with specialization in Environmental Sciences.
  • 6 years (if degree) or 8 years (if diploma) of professional experience in at least two of the following areas: ISO 14001 Environmental Management System implementation; environmental risk assessments, permitting and approvals; wastewater treatment and management; conservation and management of environmental resources; and environmental regulation and enforcement in Alberta.
  • ISO 14001 Lead Auditor certification (must be obtained within the first year of employment).
  • Experience with environmental regulatory strategies and significant working knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, standards, guidelines, and best management practices.
  • Experience preparing or reviewing environmental impact assessments, environmental evaluation, biophysical impact assessment, environmental risk assessment, environmental biophysical monitoring, ECO plans, and erosion and sediment control plans.
  • Experience leading all aspects of environmental regulatory management, including strategic planning; securing diverse federal, provincial, and municipal approval; and ensuring rigorous compliance through effective monitoring, reporting, and documentation.
  • Experience with incident investigation, as well as risk assessment and management.
  • Experience navigating the provincial Digital Regulatory Assurance System (DRAS).
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated relationship-building and conflict-management skills.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and proven presentation skills to inform and guide decision makers.
  • Strong written communication skills, capable of developing documents ranging from technical to general.
  • The ability to represent the City of Edmonton in a professional, honest, respectful, and safe manner.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, with the ability to coordinate and facilitate meetings and activities with internal staff and external agencies.
  • The ability to work outdoors for extended periods in unfavorable weather conditions.
  • The ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as in a team environment where work responsibilities depend on team cooperation and collaboration.
  • Research and problem-solving skills to gather required information, make decisions, and develop recommendations.
  • Proficiency with the Google Workspace: Sheets, Docs, Slides, etc.

  • Have and maintain a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent).
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment, such as wearing steel toed boots.
  • Will be required to arrange own transportation for use while on City business.
  • Will be required to obtain business auto insurance.

Nice To Haves

  • Registration as a professional in an environmental discipline is an asset, such as; Designation as a Professional Biologist (P.Biol.) or Professional Agrologist (P.Ag.), or eligible for designation.
  • Wetland Authenticating Professional (eligible to sign-off on wetland regulatory documents in Alberta).
  • Qualified Aquatic Environmental Specialist (QAES) capable of supporting federal and provincial regulatory applications.
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams in large, complex organizations.
  • Project management experience.
  • Data management and visualization abilities.
  • Experience using GIS.

Responsibilities

  • Champion environmental excellence by supporting and enhancing our ISO 14001-aligned environmental management system.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental legislation and regulations.
  • Provide high quality advice and support on environmental regulations, permitting pathways, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Investigate environmental issues and identify solutions to ensure compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Provide environmental advice to internal teams to help them set green objectives.
  • Craft technical reports translating complex environmental data into clear, actionable insights.
  • Act as a liaison between business areas and regulatory bodies.
  • Lead environmental projects and studies from procurement to completion.
  • Research and develop new environmental practices and emergency preparedness plans.
  • Inspire continuous improvement and help achieve environmental goals.
