About The Position

Conducts preliminary and comprehensive environmental field inspections of commercial, residential, institutional, and industrial enterprises including asbestos abatement, demolition projects and other situations to ensure enforcement and compliance with County, State, and Federal laws and regulations. Prepares technical reports of the site and/or facility. Cites violators and provides technical environmental assistance to the general public. Completes training and obtains certification and licensing required to fulfill the required duties of the position. Assists with the training of new environmental engineer personnel relative to the policies and procedures of the department.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering; Industrial Technology; Public Health; Environmental Planning; Environmental Policy; Environmental Health; Environmental Management; Science; or Natural Resources, Mathematics, or Information Technology
  • Two (2) years full-time work experience in the environmental and sustainability.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and current proof of insurance.
  • Degrees awarded outside of the United States with the exception of those awarded in one of the United States territories and Canada, must be credentialed by the World Education Services (WES), Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) or a National Association of Credential Evaluation (NACES) member organization.
  • Ability to research, interpret, and explain environmental regulations at the county, state, and federal (OSHA, AHERA, CAA/NESHAP, TSCA, RCRA) levels.
  • Knowledge of air pollution emissions and industrial processes (including combustion), basic knowledge of construction principles and pollution control devices.
  • Knowledge of the operation, calibration, and basic troubleshooting of portable monitoring devices and measurement tools used in environmental pollution control, coupled with attention to detail and strong observational skills for hazard identification.
  • Skill in strong written and verbal communication, with the ability to interact effectively with the public, colleagues, and stakeholders.
  • Skill to learn new technologies and regulations, strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills, and a commitment to environmental protection and public health.
  • Skill creating technical diagrams, drawings and hand sketches of industrial and commercial processes and/or related facility layouts.
  • Ability to perform various types of exertion (lifting, climbing, etc.) and willingness/ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including respirators.
  • This position requires moderate to extensive travel to work assignments throughout Cook County, for which the employee must provide his or her own adequate means of transportation.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
