About The Position

The Oakland Community Environmental Research Project(OCERP) is an 18-month project working to empower underserved youth in Alameda County through hands on STEM education, environmental research, and public health advocacy. Targeting BIPOC, immigrant, foster, justice-involved, and unhoused youth, OCERP combines classroom learning, outdoor fieldwork, and urban gardening to address local issues like soil and water contamination and climate resilience. The Environmental ambassador will assist with all East Bay Academy of Young Scientists(EBAYS) program activities and work closely with the both the youth department staff and adult employment staff. This position reports to the Program Supervisor.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or another related field is highly desired, or a minimum of 2 years’ relevant experience in youth services and/or counseling.
  • Have experience conducting research
  • Effective verbal, listening, and written communication skills. The candidate must be able to work with diverse populations, cultures, and families (youth, adolescents, parents, and elders, families), each with varying needs.
  • Good organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to multitask. Good analytic skills, critical thinking skills, ability to create accurate and insightful data outcomes and evaluation (strong Excel, Word, PPT)
  • Creative, dedicated, energetic, organized, and motivated with youth and client tracking and record keeping.
  • Demonstrate ability to work with in and out of school youth of diverse ethnic and social backgrounds, and motivated in career counseling and coaching.
  • Ability to work late or on weekends as needed for program-related activities.
  • Work effectively under pressure, manage time management, and able to work as a team.
  • Proficient in Computer skills: MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, database management, and Internet Explorer.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual in Chinese, Spanish, Arabic, and Tigrinya is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and conduct major community outreach, attend resource fairs to recruit underserved Alameda County youth from 16 -26 years of age.
  • Contact youth, explain about the research project, and invite them to participate.
  • Provide orientation and work with youth participants to coordinate presentations, youth council meetings, and community education events
  • Assist the Environmental Education Specialist with delivering the EBAYS program curriculum
  • Assist the Environmental Education Specialist with Planning and coordinating outdoor fieldwork sessions, gardening activities, and field trips to various state parks.
  • Lead Peer outreach campaigns in order to reach out to additional youth.
  • Provide one-on-one mentorship and support
  • Cultivate, build trust, and maintain relationships with youth leaders
  • Community Support: Services to address members’ health-related social needs to improve health and well-being.
  • Assist in organizing the annual youth leadership empowering conference.
  • In-house tracking system, daily log, case notes, and all other activities follow program policy and procedure.
  • Represent LFCD at local collaborative community meetings, attend all the required trainings, related meetings, or conferences as assigned.
  • Prepare Monthly and Quarterly program reports
  • Other duties assigned by the Youth Supervisor
