About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a Nursing Assistant to perform specific tasks to assist members of the Nursing team in providing patient care under the direct supervision of Registered Nurses. This position is located in the Burn Treatment Center and Intermediate Care Unit (8 JCP), a 17-bed unit equipped with a state-of-the-art hydrotherapy room for burn/wound dressing care, a pediatric playroom, and a rehabilitation gym. The unit cares for both adult and pediatric burn patients, as well as an adult trauma population requiring intermediate monitoring care. The unit has both inpatient and outpatient (Burn Clinic) facilities. Our staff also provide burn outreach and education and annually host a Burn Camp for burn patient survivors. The American College of Surgeons has designated our unit as a Level I Burn Center since 1996.

Responsibilities

  • Communicates and interacts with patients, visitors, and other health care professionals in an effective manner and maintains positive, cooperative relationships
  • Implements the plan of care under the direction of the registered nurse, providing appropriate care with regard to patient’s condition and age
  • Observes patients for changes in physical condition throughout their stay, and reports to registered nurse
  • Assembles equipment and supplies in preparation for various diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by nurses or physicians
  • Performs simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as assigned (i.e. enemas, collecting specimens, preoperative preparation of skin)
  • Performs computer functions within scope of role as defined by the individual unit
  • Implements measures to prevent potential patient problems/complications and reports unusual incidents in consultation with the registered nurse
  • Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality
  • Practices standard precautions in infection control in accordance with institutional policy
  • Assists staff during emergencies, within the scope of practice
  • Performs other projects and tasks as assigned
  • Participates in unit staff meetings and in-services
  • Complies with annual competency review guidelines
  • Incorporates the principles of Service Leadership to ensure positive patient/customer relations
  • Adheres to UI Health Care policies regarding personal conduct, including follows established leadership, remaining responsive to instruction and coaching from supervisors and meeting the standards of personal appearance, attendance and punctuality
