About The Position

Burgundy Diamond Mines is seeking an Advisor Environment (Wildlife) to lead wildlife components of environmental compliance, monitoring, and closure planning at the Ekati Diamond Mine. This role involves managing technical work and providing regulatory, permitting, and technical advice. The position is based in Calgary, Alberta, with a Monday to Friday schedule. Regular travel to the Ekati mine site, Yellowknife, Indigenous communities, and other locations as needed is required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in biological sciences, with a focus on wildlife biology or related wildlife discipline.
  • Five years of directly related technical and/or project execution and closure experience.
  • Knowledge of wildlife regulations, monitoring, data interpretation, and reporting.
  • Experience in working in the north – caribou management, utilizing quantitative/qualitative analysis, modelling and adhoc reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, evaluation, and refinement of wildlife programs in accordance with regulatory requirements and commitments (e.g., NWT Wildlife Act, Wildlife Effects Monitoring Program), business objectives, stakeholder engagement, and Dominion’s Sustainable Development Policy.
  • Ensure wildlife programs conform to short- and long-term program requirements and goals.
  • Manage technical consultants, including the development and execution of field and office-based scopes of work.
  • Interface with bear management programs and work with other wildlife programs and environmental assessments.
  • Participate in NWT government forums and represent the company in indigenous collaborations and events.
  • Represent the company in industry events and partnerships where required.
  • Support field and office-based work associated with baseline, environmental effects, special studies, and regulatory monitoring.
  • Work in conjunction with the Environmental Advisor – Projects and Reclamation Planning to complete closure research objectives and develop closure objectives and criteria.
  • Review consultant-developed technical reports on baseline studies, annual monitoring programs, special studies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage and report on project deadlines, completion, and budgets.
  • Support mining operations through the provision of technical and regulatory guidance.
  • Support permitting of new developments and changes to existing developments.
  • Develop and maintain work procedures, health and safety procedures, and risk assessments for wildlife programs.
  • Ensure effective community and regulatory engagement on wildlife programs.
  • Provide technical advice on wildlife closure planning and implementation.
  • Present monitoring and study findings to regulators and stakeholders.
  • Manage application, amendment, and renewal of wildlife permits.
