About The Position

S&ME is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic entry-level Geotechnical Engineer to join our team in Indianapolis, Indiana. This role supports a wide range of civil, geotechnical, and environmental projects, offering the opportunity to learn from licensed Engineers and/or Geologists. The position involves a strong mix of fieldwork and office-based analysis, including subsurface exploration, environmental investigations, construction support, and technical reporting. S&ME has a 50-year history of delivering innovative geotechnical, civil, environmental, and construction material testing services across various industries.

Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, Geology, Mining, or a related field
Engineer in Training (EIT) certification with the desire to pursue PE licensure in the future
Passion for Geotechnical solutions with a strong interest in field and analytical work
Basic technical writing skills at the college level
Willing and able to perform the physical demands of the position with the use of company-provided Personal Protective Equipment
Willing and able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
Willing and able to walk over rough, uneven terrain and stand (potentially up to 12 hours a day)
Willing and able to routinely lift and carry 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
Willing and able to work outside of normal business hours and travel (typically out-of-town and/or overnight) as project needs arise
Candidates must comply with our Fleet Management, Substance Policy, and Reference Check requirements.

Responsibilities

Conduct fieldwork including soil borings, drilling oversight, monitoring well installation, soil and rock classification, in-situ testing, and collection of soil, groundwater, and gas samples at project sites.
Analyze subsurface conditions, support laboratory testing programs, interpret geological and geotechnical data, and assist with engineering and environmental evaluations.
Prepare data tables, figures, and graphical presentations; compare results to state and federal regulatory standards; and assist in writing clear, well-organized technical reports.
Perform construction and environmental inspections, document site conditions, and ensure compliance with project plans, specifications, and regulatory requirements.
Coordinate with drilling contractors, laboratories, vendors, and project team members, and communicate effectively with internal staff and external clients.
