About The Position

The FY27 Proposed Budget includes an increase to the pay range: $57,671 - $112,556 (Bill 32-26). This role involves providing emergency medical services to the highest level of certification, operating advanced life support or basic life support medical units and/or other emergency firefighting and rescue equipment. Responsibilities include participating in drills and training exercises, performing fire prevention inspections, conducting public education safety presentations, and engaging in fire suppression activities. This is a full-time, permanent, safety-sensitive position within the Fire Department that may require shift work. The recruitment and selection process includes specific critical dates for application submission, written exams, oral assessments, physical ability tests, background checks, and medical evaluations, with academy start dates in January/February 2027 and July/August 2027. Candidates must attend the written examination and oral assessment on the assigned dates to be considered. The written examination and oral assessment are in-person, video-based, and will be administered on the same day over a weekend in July 2026. Candidates can expect a testing period of two to seven hours, with an average of three and a half hours. No electronic devices or physical media are allowed during testing, but candidates may bring food and drinks. A valid picture ID is required for the written exam.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalency.
  • Six (6) or more months of work experience.
  • A valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age prior to the start date of the Academy, January 2027.
  • NO PRIOR FIRE SERVICE RELATED EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.
  • Must present a VALID PICTURE ID at the time of the written exam.
  • Successfully complete the Written Examination.
  • Successfully complete the Oral Assessment.
  • Successfully complete the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT).
  • Successfully complete the Background Investigation.
  • Successfully complete the Medical Examination.
  • Successfully complete the Controlled Dangerous Substance Test (CDS).

Nice To Haves

  • Volunteer members of the Anne Arundel County Fire Service who have actively served for two (2) years prior to application.
  • Possess MFRI basic Firefighting course.
  • Certified Emergency Medical Technicians.
  • Successfully completed ALL selection procedure components.
