About The Position

Family Life Academy Charter School (FLACS) is a nonprofit network of high-performing charter schools in the South Bronx. FLACS is seeking dynamic educators who value collaboration, believe education is activism, and want to work in an environment where academic excellence is the norm. They believe young people can be leaders who create positive change and that schools should be safe, warm, and caring environments. FLACS offers an embedded professional development program to nurture educators' skills. The English as a New Language (ENL) teacher (K-5) provides legally mandated services to identified English Language Learners and students needing at-risk interventions. The ENL teacher works in small groups and pushes into classrooms, collaborating with general education teachers in a team model. They provide specialized instruction to help English language learners progress in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, and support their access to the FLACS K-5 curriculum, aligned with the New York State Next Generation Learning Standards. The ENL teacher also works with school administrators to implement procedures and policies and communicates with students’ parents, guardians, and/or caregivers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree is required
  • New York State Teaching Certification in English to Speakers of other Languages (all grades)
  • Clearance for fingerprint and criminal background check

  • Prior satisfactory teaching experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Creates academically rigorous, standards-based, culturally relevant lesson plans that foster critical thinking and problem-solving and provide scaffolds so students can learn English.
  • Utilizes student-centered instructional strategies to engage students and differentiate teaching based on the diverse, individual needs of students so that students can access grade level content.
  • Coplans and co-teaches with general education teachers.
  • Analyzes data from ongoing formative and summative assessments to refine instructional practices and impact student achievement.
  • Maintains strong classroom management and implements school wide policies and procedures to ensure a safe, caring and orderly school environment.
  • Establishes a classroom culture of caring, respect and rapport which holds all students to high academic standards, promotes inclusion, fosters a love of learning, and builds positive relationships.
  • Grades student work and provides students with actionable feedback, and returns work and/or enters these grades into online systems shared with students and families promptly.
  • Seeks to actively know students’ strengths and challenge areas and communicates these effectively with families using online portals, report cards and other means.
  • Participates in professional development, professional learning communities, grade-level activities and school wide functions.
  • Shares best practices with colleagues by participating in professional learning communities, grade-level or content teams, and cross-school groups.
  • Manages both regulatory and instructional requirements as an ENL teacher.
  • Administers Home Language Questionnaires and administers NYSITELL to determine student eligibility for ENL services.
  • Administers NYSESLAT test annually.
