About The Position

Davis School Chicago is seeking a part-time English Teacher for its founding year. This role involves teaching English I: The Art of Reading and Writing and its Honors variant, which is the initial course in a four-year sequence leading to AP English Language and AP English Literature. The teacher will be responsible for developing students' close reading, discussion, and writing skills, fostering a classroom environment that values evidence, argument, and strong writing. As a founding faculty member, the teacher will also contribute to curriculum development, school culture, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The position emphasizes teaching writing as a craft through drafting, feedback, and revision, and promoting inquiry-based learning. The school is a proudly Jewish, college-preparatory high school opening in fall 2027 in downtown Chicago.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred in English, Literature, Writing, or English Education.
  • Illinois Professional Educator License in high school English language arts preferred.
  • National Board Certification a major plus.
  • 3+ years of English teaching preferred.
  • College-preparatory, independent, Jewish day, or faith-based settings a plus.
  • Evidence of student writing that grew because you taught it.
  • Seminar-quality reading and discussion.
  • Craft taught through drafting, feedback, and revision.
  • Growth students can see, feedback students can use.
  • The written and spoken word visible in the life of the school.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in English, Literature, Writing, or English Education.
  • Illinois Professional Educator License in high school English language arts.
  • National Board Certification.
  • College-preparatory, independent, Jewish day, or faith-based school experience.
  • Being Jewish is not a requirement for this role.
  • Fewer years but exceptional craft.
  • Ability to teach history in addition to English (for full-time Humanities Department Chair role).

Responsibilities

  • Teach sections of English I: The Art of Reading and Writing, including the Honors variant, as assigned.
  • Design and implement engaging, standards-based lessons that build close reading, analytical writing, and disciplined discussion.
  • Teach in the spirit of the accomplished-practice standards for English language arts teaching (National Board for Professional Teaching Standards): students read and view a wide range of texts, write for real audiences and purposes, participate actively in discussions of texts, and pursue inquiry that examines multiple perspectives and asks critical questions.
  • Cultivate a reading culture built on complete major works: teacher-curated books worth loving and reading whole rather than excerpted.
  • Teach writing as craft, through real drafting, real feedback cycles, and real revision.
  • Promote inquiry-based learning, analytical writing, discussion, research, and project-based experiences, including immersive and experiential approaches — simulation, role-play, performance — where they deepen mastery.
  • Build toward the Advanced Placement frameworks that anchor the English sequence — AP English Language and Literature — and teach so that students meet or exceed them.
  • Differentiate instruction to support diverse learners and learning styles.
  • Utilize educational technology where it strengthens reading and writing, never where it replaces them.
  • Assess student progress through a variety of formative and summative measures and provide timely, meaningful feedback.
  • Develop authentic assessments that measure student growth and mastery.
  • Collaborate in the development of a vertically aligned English curriculum that feeds the school’s AP sequence.
  • Foster a classroom environment characterized by curiosity, respect, inclusion, and intellectual challenge.
  • Build strong relationships with students and serve as a trusted mentor and advisor.
  • Support students’ academic, social, and emotional growth.
  • Encourage student leadership, confidence, and active participation in school life.
  • Contribute actively to the vibrant culture and mission of Davis School Chicago.
  • Partner with colleagues to support school-wide programming, celebrations, and community initiatives.
  • Help create opportunities for students to engage with reading and writing beyond the classroom, from publications to speech and debate.
  • Serve as an ambassador for English and the literary arts within the school and broader community.
  • Showcase student achievement through competitions, presentations, exhibitions, and public events.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and community events as scoped for a part-time role.
  • Help moderate student clubs and activities where scope allows.
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with families regarding student progress and learning goals.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across academic departments to develop interdisciplinary learning experiences.
  • Partner with faculty and school leadership to advance school goals, curriculum development, and student success initiatives.

Benefits

  • Paid leave and paid sick leave accrue as required by law.
  • This position is not eligible for the school’s benefits package.
