About The Position

This is a specialized teaching position performed in a classroom within an acute care psychiatric hospital setting. The teacher's role is to help each pupil develop fundamental communication and literacy skills, including reading, writing, speaking, listening, and study skills. The position involves providing opportunities for wide reading and varied writing purposes and audiences, and developing critical judgment of media and communications. The teacher is responsible for furthering citizenship development and instructing pupils in basic subject matter as specified by law and district procedures. This role also includes teaching English courses to secondary pupils, developing lesson plans, and utilizing various instructional aids and technology. The teacher will provide individual or small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to pupil needs, assess progress, and maintain records. Establishing a positive learning environment, maintaining pupil behavior standards, and engaging in professional development are also key aspects of this position. Collaboration with other staff, counselors, and parents is essential to address pupil needs and progress. The teacher may also supervise out-of-classroom activities and serve as a sponsor for extracurricular activities like debate or forensics. Additionally, the role involves participating in committees and professional organizations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with a major or minor in English.
  • Tuberculin skin test certifying that the individual is free of contagious tuberculosis.
  • Eligible for, or in possession of, an appropriate Virginia Teaching Certificate.
  • Demonstrates an in-depth knowledge of the subject(s) to be taught.
  • Demonstrates considerable knowledge of the principles and methodologies of effective teaching of English.
  • Uses personal computers and related technology.
  • Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing, with pupils, parents, other teachers, administrators, and classified employees.

Responsibilities

  • Provide effective academic instruction in an acute care psychiatric hospital setting.
  • Help each pupil to develop reading, writing, speaking, listening, and study skills.
  • Provide opportunities to read widely and write for a variety of purposes and audiences.
  • Develop standards for critical judgment of media such as films and videos, as well as written and oral communications.
  • Further the development of citizenship and instruct pupils in basic subject matter.
  • Teach English courses to secondary pupils utilizing courses of study adopted by the School Board and appropriate curriculum publications.
  • Develop lesson plans that include appropriate learning activities and instructional aids.
  • Demonstrate concepts and skills by use of models, chalkboard, overhead projector, other standard or teacher prepared instructional aids, and technology.
  • Provide individual or small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
  • Assess each pupil’s progress in developing communication skills.
  • Select and request appropriate books, instructional aids, and instructional supplies; maintain required inventory records.
  • Establish and maintain an environment conducive to positive teacher/student relations.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior for an orderly, productive learning environment.
  • Maintain professional competence through professional development activities.
  • Identify pupils’ needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in helping solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Communicate with school counselors to discuss the pupils’ progress.
  • Communicate with parents to discuss the pupils’ progress and discuss current research and practice in teaching communication skills.
  • Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned workday.
  • Serve as sponsor of activities such as debate, forensics, and newspaper.
  • Serve on committees to advise on non-academic affairs such as school discipline, honors, awards, assemblies.
  • Participate in local, state, and national English and reading organizations and civic associations.
  • Participate cooperatively with the principal or designee to develop the method by which he/she will be evaluated.
