About The Position

The Agnes Irwin School is seeking a full-time 8th and 9th Grade English Long Term Substitute teacher, beginning on or about September 24, 2026 through early November 2026. They will possess an ability to teach analytical writing, critical thinking, and research skills, and have skills designing and implementing project based learning and experiential curricula. Demonstrates cultural competency and skills engaging with and learning from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences. Has a strong background in many areas of English Language Arts. Will foster the skills necessary for sophisticated and observant literacy, as well as the joy in learning that can sustain a life long love of reading. Can develop writing instruction that combines the best of traditional methodologies with an innovative vision of writing in the 21st century. Has interest and/or experience designing interdisciplinary curricula, particularly within the humanities. Regards collaboration as an essential component of professional growth and values working on a team. Is willing and eager to take on significant co-curricular responsibilities outside of the classroom (e.g., advising, coaching, club advisor, trip lead, etc.), and who finds joy in working with middle and high school students. Is willing to engage across difference with empathy and understanding. Other duties include writing student reports; effective communication and collaboration with students, colleagues, and families; and attendance at meetings.

Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in English or related field
Proficiency in the use of classroom technology: interactive smart boards, LMS, various Google and Microsoft Office applications, etc
Strong interpersonal skills
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment and respect different values and viewpoints

Responsibilities

Teach and manage students in four sections of English in 8th and 9th grade
Prepare course materials
Maintain student attendance and grade records
Evaluate and grade students' work
Be available to meet with students during office hours and planning periods
Create and maintain a caring, safe environment conducive to students doing their best work
Implement current curriculum and contribute to its ongoing development
Participate in the life of the middle and/or upper school by serving as an advisor and/or club sponsor as necessary
Participate in all staff meetings, assemblies, and other required school functions, including occasional evening or weekend events
Work constructively with parents and colleagues
Inform parents and Division Director of students’ progress through written reports and conferences
Attend conferences, workshops, and other professional development opportunities, and participate in the faculty evaluation process
Assume other duties as assigned
