Secondary English classrooms hold a different kind of conversation. Students walk in carrying opinions, questions, frustrations, humor, or stories they are still figuring out how to tell. The classroom becomes a place where students learn how to think carefully, communicate honestly, and stay engaged when the work feels hard. Requirements

Valid Washington State teaching certificate with appropriate English Language Arts endorsement or ability to obtain appropriate endorsement prior to employment.
Successful completion of required Washington State Patrol (WSP) and FBI background clearance.
Ability to support a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment for secondary students.
Ability to communicate effectively with students, families, staff, and administration.
Ability to maintain regular attendance, consistent presence at the assigned work site, and assigned work hours.
Ability to comply with district policies, procedures, and applicable state and federal requirements.
Compliance with the Washington State Code of Professional Conduct and professional educator standards.
Ability to perform the essential functions and responsibilities of the position.

Nice To Haves

Master’s degree in English, Education, Curriculum & Instruction, Literacy, or related field.
Previous secondary English Language Arts teaching experience.
Experience supporting students with varying academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs.
Experience with intervention strategies, differentiated instruction, and standards-based instructional practices.
Experience teaching advanced coursework, dual-credit coursework, AP, or College in the High School courses.
Familiarity with instructional technology and digital learning tools that support student learning and engagement.
Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
Experience collaborating in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) or team-based instructional settings.

Responsibilities

Teach secondary English Language Arts courses aligned to student, program, and scheduling needs at Lakeside High School. Courses may include literature, composition, intervention, or other English offerings, depending on assignment.
Plan and deliver instruction aligned to Washington State Learning Standards and district curriculum while supporting student growth in reading, writing, communication, and critical thinking.
Create a classroom environment that is safe, respectful, and conducive to learning.
Monitor student progress, maintain accurate records, communicate with families as needed, and collaborate with colleagues and support staff to meet student needs.
Participate in professional responsibilities consistent with district expectations, school improvement efforts, and the Washington State Code of Professional Conduct.
Plan and deliver effective English Language Arts instruction for secondary students.
Develop lessons, assessments, and instructional materials aligned to course standards and learning targets.
Support student growth in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills.
Maintain a classroom environment that supports student engagement, safety, respect, and productive learning.
Differentiate instruction to support students with varying academic needs and abilities.
Monitor and communicate student progress in a timely and professional manner.
Maintain accurate attendance, grading, and student records.
Collaborate with colleagues, intervention teams, special programs, and administration.
Participate in required meetings, professional development, and district initiatives.
Supervise students appropriately in the classroom and assigned supervisory settings.
Follow district policies, procedures, and professional expectations.
Perform other duties reasonably related to the teaching assignment and supervision of students as assigned by the building principal or district administration.
