About The Position

Kennedy International School is seeking a dynamic, student-centered English Language Arts teacher for a maternity leave coverage position. This role involves teaching a combination of middle and high school classes, including one section of International Baccalaureate (IB) Language and Literature (Year 1), with the ability to instruct students in grades 6–11. The ideal candidate is a dedicated educator of literature and writing who brings creativity, cultural responsiveness, and an interdisciplinary approach to the classroom, using critical inquiry as a central teaching approach. Kennedy International School provides a bilingual, well-rounded education for its students from preschool through 12th grade. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Has relevant experience in an Upper School setting
  • Has strong classroom management skills

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree preferred, ideally in English, Education, or a related field
  • 3-5 years teaching experience
  • Familiarity with the International Baccalaureate program
  • Preferred candidate will have a current U.S. work visa, if applicable

Responsibilities

  • Instruct six sections of Upper School English, including one section of IB English.
  • Design and facilitate UbD (Understanding by Design) aligned units and lessons that prioritize backward planning, inquiry-driven learning, and conceptual understanding.
  • Embed IB Approaches to Learning (ATL skills) into daily instruction, fostering critical thinking, communication, collaboration, research, and self-management skills.
  • Integrate interdisciplinary connections across subject areas to support holistic, concept-driven learning experiences.
  • Engage students in the study of the language and literature of diverse communities and their cultures, fostering global awareness and cultural understanding.
  • Design instruction that develops the six skill areas: listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing, and presenting.
  • Provide students with opportunities to analyze and respond to a wide range of literary and non-literary text types.
  • Guide students in examining writing styles and techniques while considering context, audience, purpose, and the effective use of linguistic and literary devices.
  • Incorporate contemporary and diverse texts that reflect a broad spectrum of voices, perspectives, and lived experiences.
  • Communicate proactively and effectively with students, families, and school leadership regarding academic progress, learning goals, and student wellbeing.
  • Design and implement ongoing formative and summative assessments, providing meaningful feedback and supporting reflective learning cycles.
  • Actively contribute to Upper School life, including advisory, supervision duties, and participation in community-wide events and initiatives that strengthen school culture.
  • Foster an inclusive, structured, and student-centered learning environment that cultivates the IB Learner Profile attributes and encourages intellectual risk-taking, agency, and growth.
