Family Life Academy Charter School (FLACS) is a nonprofit network of high-performing charter schools in the South Bronx. FLACS, together with the Latino Pastoral Action Center and parents, aims to create conditions for self-empowerment for all its K-12 students to excel academically, take responsibility for their own learning, and affirm human values. The school is seeking dynamic educators who value collaboration, believe education is activism, want to work in an environment where academic excellence is the norm, believe young people can be leaders, and desire to work in a place where their skills will be nurtured through an embedded professional development program. The English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher (9-12) will engage students in mastering grade-level ELA skills by nurturing critical thinking, centering diverse, relevant, and rigorous texts, prioritizing student voices and ideas to build agency, and centering writing as a tool for analysis. Using a shared FLACS Network ELA curriculum aligned with the NYS Next Generation ELA Learning Standards, the teacher will design daily lesson plans that are responsive to the diverse learning needs of all students, including general education, students with disabilities, and English Language Learners, while holding all students to high academic expectations. The ELA Teacher is primarily responsible for teaching one course preparation but may be required to teach additional preparations such as an advisory course, AP course, elective course, or remedial support workshop.
