About The Position

This role is part of the Swiss Re Graduate Programme for Early-Career Talent, designed for individuals completing or recently completing a bachelor's degree who are motivated to grow, learn, and make a difference in the complex world of reinsurance and commercial insurance. The program offers rotational opportunities within local teams and tailored training to build expertise. The Engineering Underwriting Analyst will gain a 360° view of Engineering and Specialty Reinsurance, contributing across the underwriting value chain. Working with experienced professionals, they will analyze complex risks, contribute to underwriting decisions, and solve business challenges. The program includes structured training, mentoring, coaching, and exposure to senior leaders, aiming to develop a broad understanding of underwriting, portfolio management, claims, client engagement, and risk assessment, laying the foundation for a specialized career at Swiss Re.

Requirements

  • Completed, or about to complete, a bachelor's degree in Engineering, Risk Management & Insurance, Data Analytics, or another quantitative discipline; relevant master's degrees may also be considered.
  • Demonstrated academic rigor through course selection and performance; a cumulative minimum GPA of 3.0 is expected.
  • No more than three years of professional experience.
  • Fluent in English and Spanish, with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Intellectually curious about engineering risks, emerging technologies, infrastructure development, and the evolving global risk landscape.
  • Ability to build strong relationships and adapt communication style to collaborate effectively with clients, brokers, engineers, and colleagues across teams, cultures, and geographies.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and confidently with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrate ownership, integrity, sound judgment, initiative, and attention to detail.
  • Curious about AI and emerging technologies and how they can enhance underwriting analysis, risk assessment, and decision-making.
  • Willing to travel.

Responsibilities

  • Review and assess risk factors for project applications across a broad range of industries, including Infrastructure, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Power Generation, Renewable Energy, Industrial Engineering, Biochemical and Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Naval or Marine Engineering.
  • Assess emerging risks and global critical projects such as semiconductor plants, data centres, battery manufacturing, hydrogen power generation, and more.
  • Review technical reports, project information, coverage terms, loss history, financial information, natural catastrophe exposures, and market trends.
  • Analyze risk information, including engineering inspection reports or other technical assessments, coverage information, loss history, financial statements, and market trends, to prepare and propose informed decisions on policy acceptance or rejection.
  • Calculate appropriate premiums based on risk assessment, natural catastrophe risk, and coverage provided, within company guidelines.
  • Collaborate with brokers, clients, and internal stakeholders to develop a well-rounded underwriting view of each risk.
  • Participate in client meetings, broker discussions, marketing events, and cross-functional projects as experience grows.
  • Support risk selection, pricing, and underwriting recommendations within company guidelines and with guidance from senior underwriters.
  • Actively participate in a cross-functional project to gain an end-to-end understanding of the underwriting value chain, including portfolio steering.
  • Broaden and deepen skills and expertise in at least one of the following areas: Underwriting (Property, Casualty, Specialty), Claims handling, Client management, Portfolio steering, and Data analytics.
