About The Position

The Engineering Technician 1–4 assists engineers with traffic studies and traffic operations for the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development in District 08, Unit 002, Rapides Parish. The role includes field measurements and traffic data collection, temporary traffic control design and layout, checking plans and maintenance operations for compliance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), reviewing construction plans for traffic-related items and safety, and representing the Traffic Operations Section in meetings. The position reports to the Assistant Traffic Engineer. Appointment may be probational, job appointment, detail to special duty, voluntary demotion, or promotion. The level hired—Engineering Technician 1, 2, 3, or 4—depends on the selected applicant’s experience.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED, or six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Assist a professional engineer with a broad range of traffic operations.
• Collect traffic data for engineering studies, including volume counts, turning movement counts, and speed studies; enter data into the appropriate database or application.
• Perform field measurements and traffic data collection.
• Plan and lay out temporary traffic control, ensuring MUTCD compliance in plans and maintenance operations.
• Review construction plans for traffic-related items and safety.
• Conduct plan reviews, project inspections, plan-in-hand meetings, and traffic signal inspections.
• Respond to public requests and research crash data.
• Analyze gathered information and recommend traffic control and capacity improvements in accordance with state laws, department procedures, Engineering Directives and Standards, the MUTCD, and the Highway Capacity Manual.
• Represent the Traffic Operations Section in meetings.
