About The Position

This is an entry-level position with hands-on training and a defined career path toward Engineering Technician and Senior Engineering Technician opportunities. You'll inspect construction work and test materials used on City capital improvement projects to help ensure work meets established plans, specifications, and quality standards. The role requires a dependable, detail-focused problem solver who enjoys working outdoors and with technical information.

Requirements

  • An Associate of Applied Science degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Technology, or completion of an equivalent course of study
  • Four years of progressively responsible public works-related engineering design, drafting, inspection, or survey experience may be considered in place of the degree
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to accurately document technical information
  • The ability to work independently, use good judgment, and manage changing field conditions
  • The physical ability to lift and move up to 60 pounds, including concrete beams and cylinders
  • A valid Indiana driver's license is required when operating a City vehicle
  • Must obtain radiation safety and nuclear gauge hazardous-material training within six months of employment
  • Must obtain and maintain ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I certification
  • Must be comfortable working outdoors around active construction sites and changing weather conditions
  • Basic knowledge of construction inspection, material testing, drafting, and surveying
  • Ability to read and understand construction plans, specifications, maps, and technical documents
  • Experience with AutoCAD or the ability to learn specialized engineering software and equipment
  • Ability to perform field tests, prepare drawings, maintain records, and organize project information

Responsibilities

  • Inspect construction work and perform field testing of materials used on City projects
  • Document inspection and testing results and update pavement condition information
  • Assist with AutoCAD drawings, maps, cross sections, and project graphics
  • Attend project meetings and communicate professionally with contractors, City staff, and the public
  • Support surveying, property research, project photography, recordkeeping, and file organization
