Engineering Technician IV

Command Post Technologies, Inc.•Dahlgren, VA

About The Position

The Engineering Technician IV builds electrical and mechanical products to specification in a fast-paced prototyping lab. The core of the job is precise, micro-scale hand soldering, assembly, and troubleshooting of Surface Mount Technology (SMT) circuit boards. The technician works closely with E25 engineers, turning designs into working hardware quickly and to recognized quality standards. Designs change often, so the role suits someone with steady hands, a sharp eye for detail, and the initiative to solve problems without waiting to be told.

Requirements

  • 7–10 years of hands-on experience in electronics assembly, soldering and troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated skill in hand soldering and rework of fine-pitch SMT components under a microscope.
  • Steady hands and fine motor control for micro-scale work, plus strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to read schematics, assembly drawings, wiring diagrams and BOMs.
  • Proficiency with standard electronics test equipment (DMM, oscilloscope, power supplies, signal generators).
  • Working knowledge of ESD control and electronics workmanship quality standards.
  • Initiative and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced prototyping environment with shifting priorities.
  • Clear communication with engineers and government personnel.
  • Active Secret security clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship.

Responsibilities

  • Hand-solder SMT and through-hole components, including fine-pitch parts (0402/0201 passives, QFN, QFP, BGA-class packages), under a microscope.
  • Assemble, wire, and integrate prototype circuit boards, cables, harnesses, and electromechanical assemblies from schematics, drawings, and assembly instructions.
  • Perform rework and repair: component removal and replacement, pad and trace repair, and hot-air and reflow techniques.
  • Troubleshoot boards and assemblies to component level using multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, function generators, and logic analyzers.
  • Inspect work under magnification against workmanship standards and specifications; identify and correct defects.
  • Read and interpret schematics, bills of materials, assembly drawings and engineering redlines.
  • Work directly with engineers to build, test, and refine prototypes, recommending improvements to design and manufacturability.
  • Keep accurate build, test, and rework records, and give clear status updates to the government lead.
  • Maintain a clean, ESD-safe workstation and follow lab safety and security procedures.
  • Manage parts, tools, and consumables for prototype builds, flagging shortages before they affect the schedule.
