Engineering Technician III

State of North CarolinaWake County, NC

About The Position

It’s the mission of the NC Department of Transportation to connect people, products and places safely and efficiently with customer focus, accountability, and environmental sensitivity to enhance the economy and vitality of North Carolina. We encourage you to consider joining NCDOT where our work not only serves the citizens of North Carolina but has an impact on our world through all modes of transportation. The Photogrammetry Unit acquires aerial imagery and generates geospatial information products used for transportation planning, design, and construction. It uses advanced technology to obtain reliable information on the environment by recording, interpreting, and measuring remotely sensed data. The unit also partners with other government agencies for statewide orthophotography and aerial LiDAR elevation data programs serving as NCDOT's subject matter experts for aerial surveying. We have two Engineering Technician III positions open for individuals who can provide: Intermediate level technical support for the planning and production of photogrammetric mapping for functional design, preliminary design, and final design. Digital mission support files, film image scanning, digital image plotting, image processing. Intermediate level technical support for the calculation of construction earthwork pay quantities.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive technician level experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to perceive overlapping aerial imagery stereoscopicaly in three dimensions and interpret planimetric and terrain features relatively correctly.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge and understanding of the concepts, practices, and theories of professional transportation and geomatics engineering used in photogrammetry, conventional surveying, LiDAR surveying, GPS surveying and GIS as related to highway location, design, and construction.
  • Experience using and operating photogrammetric mapping software and equipment used to generate planimetric mapping, terrain elevation data.
  • Experience reviewing planimetric mapping, terrain elevation data, and orthoimagery and identifying discrepancies to engineering staff.
  • Experience expressing technical facts and maintaining records and work-specific notes in a clear, concise, and organized manner.

Responsibilities

  • Operate photogrammetric mapping hardware and software to stereoscopically view digital aerial imagery and compile planimetric mapping and terrain elevation data.
  • Review consultant and in-house produced planimetric mapping, terrain elevation data, and orthoimagery, and identify discrepancies to engineering staff.
  • Generate orthoimagery from individual frame imagery using photogrammetric mapping software programs.
  • Perform testing of new, and moderately complex geospatial processes and procedures.
