About The Position

The County of San Diego is seeking qualified applicants for Engineering Technician III. Employees in this job class perform technical and engineering work required for the enforcement, investigation, inspection, design, construction, and maintenance of engineering projects and records in office, laboratory, or field settings. The current vacancy is with the Department of Public Works. This eligible list may be used to fill future vacancies in either the Department of Public Works or Planning & Development Services. The Capital Improvement Program is responsible for overall management and coordination of planning, budget, design, environmental clearance and permitting, right-of-way acquisition and utility coordination for a wide variety of capital projects, including road, bridge, flood control, drainage, airport, and wastewater projects. The Construction Engineering Program provides administrative, technical, fiscal, schedule controls, and inspections for capital improvement construction contracts.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of paraprofessional engineering or surveying experience performing one or more of the following: construction inspection; materials testing; field surveying; traffic data collection and analysis; drafting and statistical computations for design and public works projects; subdivision, parcel map and records of survey checking; and/or real property engineering involving legal descriptions, drafting and research
  • Four (4) years of college level coursework in engineering or surveying
  • Any combination of education and experience described above which equals four (4) years
  • One (1) year as an Engineering Technician II in the County of San Diego
  • Thirty (30) college semester units from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in engineering is considered equivalent to one (1) year of work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Preparing civil engineering design drawing with guidance from staff engineers
  • Utilize Civil 3D for infrastructure site plans to prepare plan and profile sheets
  • Prepare diagrams and exhibits using Civil 3D for design projects
  • Performing Resident Engineer and Inspector duties for a moderately difficult construction project(s) or as an assistant on a large complex project.

  • Future Salary Increases: June 2026 – 4.33% increase to base pay (3.5% Across-the-Board + .83% Market Adjustment)
  • June 2027 – 3.83% increase to base pay (3% Across-the- Board + .83% Market Adjustment)
