About The Position

This position supports projects that help keep Medford's streets safe, efficient, and well-coordinated. The role blends fieldwork, technical review, public service, and problem-solving, with opportunities to inspect traffic-related improvements, review traffic control plans, gather data, respond to community concerns, and coordinate with contractors, developers, engineers, and City staff. It is hands-on public service with visible results, helping to keep Medford moving.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent
  • Four (4) years of engineering or related technical experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, surveying, construction management, computer science, or other specific area of study as deemed applicable may substitute for four (4) years of experience.
  • Associate’s degree in areas of study listed above may substitute for two (2) years of experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license by date of hire.
  • Ability to maintain acceptable driving record throughout employment.

  • New employees establishing resident status in the State of Oregon must obtain an Oregon driver’s license within 30 days (ORS 807.020 (1)).

Responsibilities

  • Produces, processes, files, and maintains a variety of records, maps, plans, permits, property descriptions and other technical-related information.
  • Assists the public with a variety of inquiries and requests for information related to public works services; pursues and resolves citizen complaints in the area of expertise.
  • Consults with and provides information to contractors, developers, other departments, agencies, and the public.
  • Prepares a variety of reports related to activities in assigned area of responsibility.
  • Assists in preparing City Council agenda commentaries; attends meetings and represents the Public Works Department.
  • Completes designated job tasks, special projects, and all other duties as assigned to meet team, department, and City goals while working cooperatively, efficiently, and productively in a team environment.
  • Actively demonstrates high levels of employee engagement, accountability, coachability, and responsibility for personal performance and results.
  • Demonstrates initiative to incorporate and implement learning principles from informal and formal training, as well as feedback from leaders and co-workers.
  • Reviewing and preparing Traffic Control Plans.
  • Performing field reviews for traffic safety, which includes sight distance, warrant analysis, and general requests from the public.
  • Analyzing traffic counts and crash records for traffic impact analysis.
  • Performing turning movement and tube counts.
  • Preparing correspondence in response to public inquiries and requests.
  • Preparing and presenting the agenda and staff analysis for the City’s Traffic Coordinating Committee and Parking Committee.
  • Hiring, scheduling, and managing temporary traffic counters to successfully complete annual traffic counts.
  • Drawing maps and exhibits in AutoCAD.
  • Preparing data for GIS maps.
  • Inspecting construction projects for conformance with design and specifications.
  • Preparing plans and specifications for traffic improvements.
  • Reviewing plans and specifications for developer projects.
  • Contracting administration for traffic and parking services and projects including parking enforcement, security, and professional services and construction contracts for traffic projects. Includes development of solicitation documents, change order administration, and payment processing.
  • Coordinating with internal and external designers and engineers for project scope, design, and compliance.
  • Approaches training opportunities with active engagement and curiosity, while learning and exhibiting understanding of City policies, protocols, and performance expectations.
  • Pursues professional development opportunities to add value to the city, including learning, adopting, and quickly adapting to new techniques, technologies, and industry practices.
  • Actively demonstrates accountability and responsibility for both work product results and the impact behaviors and decisions may have on the ability of others to do their jobs well.
