About The Position

This position serves as an Engineering Technician II in the Asheboro District Office, providing technical and functional support to the District Engineer and Assistant District Engineers. The role involves administering programs for a three-county district focused on road maintenance, minor improvement projects, and resurfacing projects. Key duties include encroachment review and inspection, driveway permit review, contract administration and inspection, surveying, design, developing resurfacing contracts, and other assigned tasks. The employee may also serve as a project inspector or assist the survey party, conducting independent inspections or survey work for roadway and structure construction to ensure compliance with contracts, standards, and specifications.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to evaluate and apply engineering judgment to plan interpretation.
  • Ability to establish positive lines of communication between technicians, engineers, and contractors.
  • Ability to perform a variety of inspections and survey duties for erosion control, material testing, earthwork, asphalt, structures, and traffic control.
  • Ability to apply safety philosophy and program to all operations.
  • Ability to work safely in outdoor environments with exposure to extreme temperatures and construction site hazards such as traffic, heights, and uneven terrain.
  • Moderate physical activity including walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing is required.
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs.
  • Safety toe footwear required.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge and understanding of NCDOT highway and bridge construction
  • Skill in evaluating and applying engineering judgment to construction plans, contract provisions, and inspection procedures
  • Experience with contract administration
  • Working knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment, software and mathematical functions
  • Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining engineering concepts to various customer groups.

  • Safely and legally operate a motor vehicle.
