About The Position

Under general supervision, performs technical and paraprofessional engineering duties in support of a variety of engineering design and construction, resource planning and operations analyses; and performs related duties as assigned. The candidate hired will be required to pass a drug screening, background check, and may be required to pass a job-related physical evaluation.

Requirements

• Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent, supplemented by college-level course work in engineering, drafting, engineering mathematics or related fields.
• Four years of progressively responsible sub-professional engineering or field survey experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Broad knowledge of water treatment and transmission equipment such as pumps, valves, motors, actuators, motor control centers (MCC), protection relays.
• Familiarity with standard practices for the potable water industry.
• Ability to effectively communicate complex ideas to non-technical personnel, verbally or in writing.
• Experience working with maintenance shop personnel.
• Ability to work effectively on critical projects and systems within a team environment with minimal supervision and under tight deadlines.
• Basic principles, practices and methods of engineering design and construction applicable to a large complex potable water utility.
• Engineering mathematics, including algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
• Fluid flow theory and design concepts.
• Methods of hydraulic analysis and modeling.
• Methods and procedures for development of engineering design and construction specifications.
• Terminology, methods, practices, techniques and nomenclature of civil, mechanical and/or electrical engineering drafting.
• Digital data handling and reporting methods and software.
• Basic design and operations of the District's distribution and transmission systems.
• Applicable District operating policies and departmental work procedures and quality standards.
• Legal and regulatory requirements applicable to water works engineering.
• Ability to perform highly technical engineering analyses and calculations and reach sound accurate conclusions.
• Ability to read, understand and interpret engineering plans, drawings, specifications, maps and other technical materials applicable to the work.
• Ability to precisely follow written and oral instructions.
• Ability to use written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to analyze and solve technical engineering problems.
• Ability to perform highly detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks.
• Ability to work with constant interruptions.
• Ability to interact with District staff, consulting engineers, representatives of other agencies and others encountered in the course of work.
• Nevada driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District’s Vehicle Insurance Policy (for some positions).
• State of Nevada Division of Environmental Protection Distribution Operator in Training certificate within 12 months of hire.

Nice To Haves

• Preparation of multi-discipline engineering drawings utilizing AutoCAD.
• Some familiarity with standard practices for the potable water industry.

Responsibilities

• Performs technical and paraprofessional engineering duties in support of a variety of engineering design and construction, resource planning and operations analyses.
• Prepares multi-discipline engineering drawings utilizing AutoCAD.
• Works effectively on critical projects and systems within a team environment.
• Operates and uses a variety of field test and data collection equipment to obtain highly accurate data.
• Utilizes GIS and other engineering/facilities databases to obtain information required for the work.
• Performs highly detailed work thoroughly, neatly and accurately.
• Develops and maintains effective working relationships with District staff, consulting engineers, representatives of other agencies and others encountered in the course of work.
