About The Position

This is a repost, all previous applicants must reapply to be considered. This posting is for an Engineering Technician I position located in the Winston-Salem Construction 1 Unit. This position assists engineers and higher-level technicians in the implementation and administration of roadway and structure construction projects awarded to private contractors. Position is responsible for assistance on several projects categorized from minor to complex. Provides inspection of every phase of a construction project to ensure it is built according to plans and specifications in a timely and cost-effective manner. The selected applicant will conduct routine inspections for compliance with contract agreements, standard/codes, permit, and specifications. Daily duties will include calculations, computation, and computer/iPad data entry. This position must establish and maintain positive lines of communication between other technicians, engineers, contractors, and the public. Should be able to effectively communicate in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner. Will be subjected to outside environment with exposure to hazards on construction sites including heights, highway traffic, and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction. Must be able to perform moderate physical activity including but not limited to walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Requirements

  • Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle preferred.
  • Must be able to perform moderate physical activity including but not limited to walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to work nights and weekends as required, to any assigned project within the Division.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment, iPad and software
  • Experience maintaining standard daily records and reports
  • Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments
  • Experience in customer service related to resolving problems that involves explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups
  • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision
