About The Position

The Alameda County Water District is recruiting for an Engineering Technician I/II in the Water Production Division. This position performs routine to difficult mapping and technical engineering work in field sampling/surveying, inspection, and office engineering functions. It utilizes various technical engineering software applications including GIS, LIMS, SQL reports, and SCADA software to prepare reports and create/update charts and maps for operational or water quality purposes. The role involves reviewing data, collecting and analyzing samples, assisting with water quality program administration, preparing project documentation, responding to customer inquiries, researching, developing, and presenting reports, and preparing routine correspondence on water quality subjects. It also assists with treatment and distribution facility performance testing. Engineering Technician I is the entry-level class, performing routine engineering technical assignments under close to general supervision. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and complex, with limited latitude for independent judgment. Opportunities exist for learning specialized equipment and developing engineering technical skills. Engineering Technician II is the intermediate level classification, independently performing difficult technical engineering assignments with responsibility for concurrent projects or ongoing assignments requiring independent action and significant impact on District relationships. Assignments are generally reviewed while in progress, and initiative and good judgment are required.

Requirements

  • Associate Degree or equivalent in engineering or closely related field.
  • Valid California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
  • Working knowledge of engineering mathematics including trigonometry.
  • Working knowledge of drafting principles, practices, techniques and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of engineering surveying principles and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of office methods and procedures, including recordkeeping and filing.
  • Working knowledge of software applications related to work assignments.
  • Working knowledge of detailing practices and standard presentation formats.
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes, guidelines and regulations.
  • Ability to work on projects alone or cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to set priorities and coordinate several concurrent projects under time pressures and deadlines.
  • Ability to perform routine to difficult mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy.
  • Ability to use drafting materials, tools and techniques to complete assignments.
  • Ability to prepare neat, accurate and legible drawings.
  • Ability to letter neatly and clearly and take accurate and legible notes.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, maps, legal property descriptions, construction drawings and related engineering documents.
  • Ability to learn and effectively use a variety of technical software applications including SCADA systems and GIS.
  • Ability to effectively use a computer, calculator and other standard office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain detailed, complete and accurate records.
  • Ability to establish and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job without causing harm to self or others.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time when performing office tasks.
  • Ability to have finger dexterity to operate a computer.

  • Ability to drive due to the need for frequent travel to water treatment plants, pump stations, reservoirs, field sites, meetings, and/or other agency facilities.
  • Ability to transport time-sensitive/confidential materials, equipment, or water samples.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies, and service disruptions.
  • Two (2) years of technical experience equivalent to an Engineering Technician I with the District (for Engineering Technician II).

Responsibilities
