About The Position

Nuclear Propulsion Test Engineering Department (E84) is currently hiring Mechanical Test Engineers and Electrical Test Engineers to support Nuclear and Steam Plant testing on Submarines and Aircraft Carriers. There are ample opportunities for advancement to Lead Test Engineer (leads testing on the propulsion plant) and Shift Test Engineer (leads testing in the reactor plant). Test engineers will be responsible but not limited to: Participate in the supervision of Newport News Shipbuilding test procedures involving the operation of reactor plant, steam plant, propulsion plant, and auxiliary equipment. Collaborate with navy personnel to establish plant conditions and tag-outs to ensure that Newport News Shipbuilding personnel can complete repairs safely. Responsible for supervising the operation and maintenance of various mechanical and electrical temporary systems. Provides technical support to engineers on a variety of technical tasks. Gathers, maintains, formats, compiles, and manipulates technical data, such as laboratory or material test results and engineering design changes. Produces engineering documentation, reports, drawings (flow charts, block diagrams, and schematics). Performs detailed mathematical calculations using established formulas; preliminary analyses of data where guidelines are provided in such areas as trajectory adequacy, model dimensional consistency; and quantitative judgments concerning technical data. Uses personal computer in performance of analyses and development of documentation/reports. May conduct tests and record data to assist with engineering evaluation or analysis.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree and 6 years of relevant experience
  • NNS Apprentice School graduate (can be used as equivalent to Associate's Degree)
  • Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate (can be used as equivalent to Associate's Degree)
  • High School/GED and 2 years of related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience (can be used as equivalent to Associate's Degree)
  • High School/GED and 4 years of non-related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience (can be used as equivalent to Associate's Degree)

  • Navy Grade E-4 and above.
