About The Position
CloudLinux is seeking an Engineering Team Lead to manage the team responsible for building and operating its email security product line, which includes an inbound anti-spam engine and an outbound SMTP gateway. This is a hands-on leadership role, blending approximately 60% leadership responsibilities (delivery, technical direction, coaching, incident command) with 40% hands-on engineering (design reviews, code review, spikes, production debugging). The ideal candidate will lead a small, senior, fully remote squad of 7-8 engineers (Go, Python, deliverability, anti-spam, data analysis/annotation) and be accountable for the team's output, reliability, and individual growth. While email expertise is not required initially, a strong background in adjacent technical domains like infrastructure, networking, security, messaging, or anti-abuse, coupled with the ability to quickly grasp complex technical areas, is essential. The role involves owning the product backlog, technical direction, production health, and people management for the team.
Requirements
- 5+ years as a software engineer
- 2+ years leading a team of engineers (team lead, tech lead with people responsibility, or engineering manager) in a product company
- Strong hands-on Linux background
- Comfortable reading and reviewing production code in Go and/or Python
- Experience debugging live systems on the box
- Track record of shipping and operating a distributed backend service under real production load
- Experience carrying a pager and running incidents
- Experience mastering a complex technical domain quickly and making credible architectural decisions
- Practical fluency with observability and data tooling (Grafana, Kibana/Elasticsearch, Redash or equivalents)
- Demonstrated people leadership: 1:1s, performance conversations, hiring, and growing engineers
- Experience working in an agentic / AI-assisted development workflow, or a clear appetite to lead one
- Professional proficiency in English, written and spoken
- Availability to work EU hours
Nice To Haves
- Working knowledge of email infrastructure: SMTP, SPF/DKIM/DMARC, rDNS, IP reputation and warm-up, RBLs, feedback loops
- Experience with open-source mail stacks (Rspamd, SpamAssassin, Postfix, Exim, Halon)
- Experience with the web hosting ecosystem (cPanel/WHM and other control panels)
- Exposure to the ML model lifecycle: training data quality, evaluation metrics, and the trade-offs in tuning detection systems
- Experience running incident and escalation management with external partners
Responsibilities
- Turn the product backlog into a credible, sequenced engineering plan, including estimates, dependencies, and a realistic release train.
- Manage the team's weekly cadence: planning, release readiness, and status reporting.
- Own engineering quality gates for model releases, ensuring measured catch rates and false-positive deltas against previous models, with a rollback path.
- Make technical debt visible and ensure it is funded and negotiated into the roadmap.
- Report delivery status and risk to engineering leadership weekly, with clear ownership and due dates for all items.
- Own the architecture of the email stack in collaboration with the architecture group, including reviewing designs, writing and approving ADRs, and making build-vs-buy decisions.
- Review code and designs on the critical path (mail flow, rate limiting, quarantine, authentication) and set standards for tests, observability, and safe rollout.
- Own production health, including SLOs, alerting, capacity, and the deliverability posture of sending infrastructure (IP reputation, SPF/DKIM/DMARC, rDNS, RBL listings).
- Act as incident commander for product-impacting events, coordinating remediation, informing partners, and authoring post-mortems within 24 hours.
- Lead a distributed team through 1:1s, goal setting, performance reviews, and career development.
- Define engineer profiles, conduct technical interviews, onboard, and mentor new engineers.
- Establish working agreements for effective asynchronous work, including written decisions, public-by-default communication, and durable artifacts.
- Model and coach AI-augmented engineering practices, focusing on prompt specificity, review quality of agent-generated code, tool-boundary awareness, context provision, iteration effectiveness, error recovery, and end-to-end task completion.
- Collaborate with the Product Owner on delivering priorities, managing partner commitments, and addressing scope-versus-capacity conflicts in writing with mitigation options.
