We have built connections with key opinion leaders who are already using the Globe System and are helping to tell our story. We are now preparing for our upcoming commercial launch. This is an exciting and significant milestone in our journey to bring this ground-breaking technology to patients. We are seeking a curious, self-driven, and technically strong Engineering Research Scientist to support the exploration of new design principles and materials for future iterations of the Globe System. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a hands-on, research-focused environment and is passionate about solving complex engineering challenges. Please note, this opportunity is a hybrid work arrangement, located in Burnaby, BC. As part of the Special Engineering Projects team, you will conduct engineering research, benchtop testing, and pilot studies to develop and deliver practical solutions to the most difficult technical and engineering challenges facing the organization. As Engineering Research Scientist, you will report to the senior manager of Special Engineering Projects, and will work closely with the Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering teams to investigate and validate new materials, bonding techniques, and surface treatments. This role will contribute to the development of innovative solutions that enhance the performance and manufacturability of our medical devices.

Requirements

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics, Physics, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field. Higher degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of real-world experience in process and materials research and development, preferably in the medical device industry.
  • Strong understanding of material chemistry, bonding methods, surface treatments, plating, and sealing techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently conduct literature reviews, design experiments, and analyze data.
  • Hands-on experience with prototyping, testing, and mechanical assembly.
  • Strong ability to document key findings in an efficient and customer-focused manner.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and external partners.
  • A proactive, curious mindset with a passion for innovation and continuous learning.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting the mechanical design team and manufacturing engineering team by exploring new solutions for the development of next-generation Globe devices.
  • Researching alternative and improved manufacturing methods, including joining techniques, surface treatment, coating, plating, and sealing.
  • Designing and conducting experiments using a methodical and systematic approach, applying the scientific method and Design of Experiment (DoE) principles.
  • Documenting and analyzing test results to inform product and manufacturing process design decisions.
  • Communicating effectively with external vendors and internal stakeholders to evaluate feasibility and implementation of new processes.
  • Collaborating with Systems and Testing teams to ensure that output of alternative and improved manufacturing methods meet Design Input Requirements.
  • Participating in root cause analysis when design or manufacturing issues arise, contributing to process or product updates.
  • Documenting test results, procedures, and processes in a clear and efficient manner, and which lend themselves to efficient hand-off to other teams within the company for implementation.
