Engineering Project Leader

ChemelexKitchener, ON
Hybrid

About The Position

Chemelex is seeking an intermediate developer to build features for their SmartTrace cloud platform. SmartTrace monitors electrical heat tracing (EHT) at large industrial sites, managing thousands of heat trace circuits. The role involves writing Node.js and TypeScript, with a significant focus on interacting with physical heat trace controllers. This includes adding support for new device families, mapping register layouts, ensuring reliable mass-programming operations, and troubleshooting data discrepancies. Unlike roles where hardware is abstracted, this position requires hands-on interaction with controllers, reading vendor manuals, and directly manipulating device settings.

Requirements

  • Node.js and TypeScript development experience.
  • Experience interacting with physical hardware and reading device register maps.
  • Understanding of Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU, and Modbus ASCII protocols.
  • Experience with REST and WebSocket APIs.
  • Familiarity with PostgreSQL and TimescaleDB.
  • Ability to work with React and Redux for front-end development.
  • Experience with OPC-UA is a plus.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with CANbus.
  • Experience with cloud platforms and telemetry ingestion at scale.
  • Familiarity with NATS messaging system.
  • Experience in troubleshooting hardware-software interactions.

Responsibilities

  • Add and extend support for heat trace controller families (Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU, and Modbus ASCII over serial-to-Ethernet gateways, plus CANbus).
  • Read vendor register maps, model device settings and metrics in a generic device schema, and prove functionality against real hardware.
  • Work on the pipeline for device messages from on-site Supervisor service to PostgreSQL and TimescaleDB, focusing on efficiency of wire format and read patterns.
  • Build and extend REST and WebSocket endpoints for alarms, settings, device metrics, reporting, and integrations with customer DCS and SCADA systems over OPC-UA.
  • Improve tooling for mass reprogramming of devices, including batching, queueing, pre-transmission validation, and recovery.
  • Carry features through the UI layer (React and Redux) when necessary, rather than handing off at the API boundary.

Benefits

  • Possibility of converting to full-time employment after a 6-month contract.
