Engineering Manager - Control Plane Platform Engineer

ClickHouse
•$205,000 - $250,000•Remote

About The Position

The Engineering Manager will lead ClickHouse’s Control Plane Platform team, which builds the shared foundation used to build and ship products in ClickHouse Cloud. The team provides common platform capabilities and patterns so engineering teams can own and deploy products while reducing duplicated infrastructure work and maintaining a consistent customer experience. This high-impact role combines people leadership, technical direction, product thinking, and operational ownership. The manager will work closely with Product, Infrastructure, Security, Support, and engineering teams across ClickHouse, and help shape how new products and teams integrate and deploy applications in ClickHouse Cloud. The platform surface includes API gateways and standards; shared services such as event bus, notifications, feature flags, websockets, and audit records; deployment and infrastructure patterns; CI and testing; local developer experience; disaster recovery; and Control Plane observability. Success includes improving integrating teams’ delivery velocity and platform adoption, while maintaining reliability, security, and cost efficiency.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of software engineering experience.
  • At least 3 years managing software engineers, with a track record of hiring, developing, and retaining strong talent.
  • Experience leading a platform or infrastructure team serving other engineering teams, and driving adoption and cross-organizational migrations through influence and tooling.
  • Experience leading distributed global teams, fostering an inclusive and autonomous culture, and creating clarity across time zones.
  • Experience building scalable, highly available, secure cloud infrastructure in AWS, including EKS, SQS, DocumentDB, Redis, PostgreSQL, and Lambdas, with infrastructure as code such as Terraform and Helm and progressive delivery such as Argo Rollouts or similar.
  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes, including patterns for hosting independently deployed applications in a shared cluster.
  • Familiarity with API platform work, including OpenAPI-driven contracts, API gateways, authentication, RBAC, rate limiting, versioning, and deprecation.
  • Track record of decomposing a monolith into independently deployable services without stalling product delivery.
  • Technical credibility to engage deeply in architecture and incidents without owning daily implementation.
  • Continued hands-on interest in code and design for complex or critical areas, code review, and guiding through feedback.
  • Strong execution judgment across ambiguity, parallel workstreams, risk, and long-term system health.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with large TypeScript/Node monorepos and related developer-experience challenges, including CI scale and flakiness, build and test times, local development environments, and code generation from specifications.
  • Experience designing and implementing load balancing, auto-scaling, disaster recovery, and failover strategies for cloud environments.
  • Experience building CI/CD at scale.
  • Experience building internal developer platforms, including service catalogs, golden-path templates, and self-service application scaffolding.
  • Proficiency with frontend frameworks such as React.
  • Experience making APIs consumable by AI agents through MCP servers, CLIs, or skills generated from API specifications.
  • Experience with ClickHouse.
  • Previous experience developing analytics or data-intensive applications.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, recruit, and develop a high-performing team; set expectations, provide feedback, manage performance, and foster an inclusive environment with psychological safety and a high technical bar.
  • Own outcomes across API gateways and standards, shared platform services, deployment and infrastructure patterns, CI and testing, local developer experience, disaster recovery, and Control Plane observability.
  • Measure platform success by integrating teams’ delivery velocity and adoption, not only by the team’s shipped output.
  • Guide architecture and help senior engineers make sound tradeoffs.
  • Deliver cross-cutting migrations, deprecations, and contract changes across teams without stalling product delivery.
  • Engage in designs and code for complex platform areas, including gateway routing and authentication/RBAC enforcement, spec-driven code generation, event delivery semantics and idempotency, and multi-region rollout safety.
  • Own SLOs, reliability, on-call quality, and cost efficiency for Kubernetes-hosted, multi-tenant services across cloud regions.
  • Systematize support, reduce toil, and build self-service and auto-healing capabilities, including golden-path templates, generators, and documentation that helps new teams integrate quickly.
  • Shape the platform vision and roadmap, sequence work for business impact, ship with tight feedback loops, and write RFCs to build cross-organizational consensus.
  • Work closely with Product, Infrastructure, Security, Support, and engineering teams across ClickHouse.

Benefits

  • Flexible work environment at a remote-friendly, globally distributed company.
  • Employer contributions toward healthcare.
  • Stock options for every new team member.
  • Flexible time off in the US and generous entitlement in other countries.
  • USD$500 home office setup contribution for remote employees.
  • Opportunities to engage with colleagues at company-wide offsites.
