Engineering Manager, Production Engineering

Tutor Intelligence•Watertown, MA
•$175,000 - $225,000•Onsite

About The Position

Tutor Intelligence is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead its Production Engineering team, which takes robot designs from prototype through mass production. Reporting to the Head of Manufacturing, this player-coach role is responsible for designing the systems and equipment used to build robots, including production processes, test systems, tooling, and change control. The manager sets direction, assigns work, grows the team, and remains hands-on in design reviews, hardware debugging, and production-floor support. The role establishes and scales the production system needed to build high-quality robots at competitive cost while designs continue to change. It owns the transition from prototype through pilot builds and volume production; test and bring-up across the production line; manufacturing representation in design change reviews; design-for-manufacturing collaboration; and root-cause resolution of recurring failures using production and field data. Success includes establishing clear ownership and priorities, addressing recurring build failures, and creating plans for test, change control, and team growth. Over time, robots should move through bring-up and final test with little rework, design changes should reach the line cleanly, and new designs should arrive ready for production. The position is onsite in Watertown, Massachusetts. Base salary is $175,000–$225,000, with equity; final compensation depends on experience, skills, and the level determined through interviews.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, or Mechatronics Engineering.
  • Proven experience leading engineers, including setting priorities, assigning work, reviewing output, and developing people; formal manager or technical lead experience counts.
  • Deep hands-on experience designing, integrating, and debugging complex electromechanical systems, including personally finding root causes.
  • Strong electrical fundamentals, including the ability to read schematics, use oscilloscopes and meters, and isolate problems across power, boards, harnesses, sensors, actuators, and communication interfaces.
  • Experience taking hardware from prototype through new product introduction into volume production.
  • Experience building production test systems, such as fixtures, bring-up, end-of-line testing, or automated testing.
  • Hands-on design-for-manufacturing and design-for-test experience with design engineering.
  • Experience managing engineering changes on an active production line.
  • Use AI tools daily in engineering work and be able to demonstrate their use.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree.
  • Experience building or scaling a production or manufacturing engineering team at a hardware startup.
  • Robotics or industrial automation experience.
  • Cost-reduction experience, such as should-cost analysis, value engineering, or reducing bill of materials and labor costs.
  • Python experience for test automation, diagnostics, or data analysis.
  • Experience with manufacturing execution systems (MES), traceability, or change-control systems.
  • Contract manufacturer or supplier bring-up experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead production engineers, test and bring-up engineers, technicians, and contract engineers by setting priorities, assigning work, and reviewing output against clear technical standards.
  • Hire, mentor, and develop engineers, and shape a team structure that can scale with production.
  • Own the transition of new designs from prototype through pilot builds into volume production, including processes, work instructions, tooling, fixtures, and station design.
  • Own the production-line test strategy, from subassembly bench tests and station tests through robot bring-up and final acceptance.
  • Represent Manufacturing in design change reviews and manage implementation of changes on the line while maintaining quality and output.
  • Partner with hardware engineering on designs that are buildable, testable, serviceable, and cost-effective.
  • Use production-line and field data to find root causes of recurring problems and drive permanent fixes.
  • Personally debug electrical, mechanical, and system-level issues when needed to ship a robot.
  • Establish plans for production test, change control, and team development.
  • Use AI tools in engineering work and demonstrate how they are applied.

Benefits

  • Fully employer-covered health insurance.
  • Managed 401(k).
  • Unlimited paid time off and all federal holidays off for full-time salaried employees.
