Engineering Manager, Cloud Platform

VerdigrisPalo Alto, CA

About The Position

Verdigris is building AI-powered energy intelligence for data centers and commercial buildings. Our cloud platform ingests high-volume sensor data, runs ML models for energy optimization and predictive maintenance, and serves insights via APIs and dashboards. We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our cloud/platform engineering team. This is a player-coach role: you will inherit an existing team, restructure it for higher performance, and grow it while staying hands-on with architecture, debugging, and technical decision-making. This is not a maintenance role. You will shape the engineering function at a critical inflection point where AI-driven demand for energy intelligence is accelerating.

Requirements

  • Technical depth in cloud/data/ML systems: can review architecture, debug production, and make tradeoffs across backend services, data pipelines, and model infrastructure
  • Team rebuild experience: has inherited an existing team, diagnosed issues, and upgraded performance through hands-on player-coach leadership
  • Execution under ambiguity: turns incomplete roadmaps and cross-functional technical work into clear plans with owners and shipped outcomes
  • Reliability and operational rigor: builds systems and habits that improve production quality (observability, incidents, release discipline, QA)
  • Mission alignment: motivated by energy/climate, understands mission-critical customer environments (data centers, commercial buildings)

Responsibilities

  • Assess cloud/platform architecture health: reliability, scalability, observability, technical debt
  • Establish team structure and ownership across platform, backend, data pipelines, and ML infrastructure
  • Implement engineering operating cadence: roadmap review, incident review, delivery planning, architecture review
  • Personally contribute to debugging and resolving the most acute reliability/performance bottlenecks
  • Partner with data/signals stakeholders on first-pass Signals QA and deployability improvements
  • Hire against critical capability gaps and begin performance-managing toward a higher talent bar
  • Demonstrably improve platform reliability and deployability for sensor ingestion, ML workflows, and API delivery
  • Build a high-functioning cloud engineering org with clear technical leadership and consistent execution
  • Create a trusted engineering roadmap that resolves previously undefined deliverables
  • Reduce cycle time from issue discovery to production fix
  • Raise hiring quality and team effectiveness through structured recruiting and calibrated expectations

Benefits

  • Meaningful Series B equity
