Engineering Manager, AI Productivity

AbridgeSan Francisco, CA
$220,000 - $250,000

About The Position

Abridge was founded in 2018 with the mission of powering deeper understanding in healthcare. Our AI-powered platform was purpose-built for medical conversations, improving clinical documentation efficiencies while enabling clinicians to focus on what matters most—their patients. Our enterprise-grade technology transforms patient-clinician conversations into structured clinical notes in real-time, with deep EMR integrations. Powered by Linked Evidence and our purpose-built, auditable AI, we are the only company that maps AI-generated summaries to ground truth, helping providers quickly trust and verify the output. As pioneers in generative AI for healthcare, we are setting the industry standards for the responsible deployment of AI across health systems. We are a growing team of practicing MDs, AI scientists, PhDs, creatives, technologists, and engineers working together to empower people and make care make more sense. We have offices located in the Mission District in San Francisco, the SoHo neighborhood of New York, and East Liberty in Pittsburgh. The Role Abridge’s services and engineering teams are in hyper-scale mode, growing rapidly with our expanding customer base and new product launches. We are looking for an engineering manager to drive improvements in developer experience and productivity across our platform organization. This includes evolving our developer platform, cloud infrastructure, and CI/CD systems to enable fast, reliable, and AI-augmented software delivery. You will own a key area within the platform team, with a strong focus on improving the end-to-end developer experience; from local development to deployment and operations. You’ll partner closely with senior leadership to scope and deliver platform capabilities that reduce friction, increase velocity, and maintain high standards for reliability and security. In this role, you’ll lead a growing team of engineers, translate strategic priorities into execution, and ensure the systems and tools our engineers rely on enable them to do their best work. You’ll also play a key role in embedding AI deeply into the development lifecycle to accelerate productivity, improve code quality, and reshape how engineers build software. This is a rapidly-evolving role that sits at the intersection of AI, developer experience, platform engineering, and healthcare.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of engineering management experience in rapidly growing organizations.
  • Experience leading and growing teams of engineers, including hiring and performance management.
  • Strong execution mindset with the ability to scope work, prioritize effectively, and deliver results.
  • Comfortable working hands-on with technical systems, including architecture and design discussions.
  • Experience building and evolving platform systems that improve developer velocity and system reliability, including cloud infrastructure, developer platforms, and CI/CD systems.
  • Experience improving developer experience across local development, CI/CD pipelines, internal tooling, and developer workflows.
  • Experience using metrics to drive improvements in developer productivity (e.g., DORA metrics, build times, deployment frequency, onboarding time).
  • Familiarity with production systems in public cloud environments (AWS, GCP, or similar).
  • Experience with containerized environments, Kubernetes, and modern infrastructure tooling (e.g., ArgoCD, Istio, Atmos).
  • Strong track record of leveraging AI tools and workflows to materially improve developer productivity, engineering velocity, and operational efficiency.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams and functions, including security as a key partner.
  • Passion for building high-performing teams and delivering impactful infrastructure.
  • Genuine passion for Abridge’s mission to improve healthcare in America and across the world.

Responsibilities

  • Own the delivery of key initiatives focused on improving developer experience and velocity across the engineering organization. Translate high-level strategy into clear, actionable plans, and drive execution across developer tooling, CI/CD, and cloud infrastructure. Partner with product engineering, security, and other stakeholders to reduce friction in the development lifecycle and enable fast, safe delivery.
  • Drive measurable improvements in developer productivity, including build and test times, deployment frequency, and onboarding experience.
  • Bring strong systems thinking and technical judgment to guide architecture and tooling decisions that improve developer ergonomics, feedback loops, and overall development velocity. While not expected to code daily, you should be comfortable diving into system design, evaluating developer workflows, and helping teams navigate complex infrastructure and platform challenges.
  • Evaluate and adopt AI-powered development tools and workflows, and guide the organization in effectively leveraging them to improve productivity and code quality.
  • Partner with leadership to grow and scale the team. Contribute to hiring efforts by identifying strong candidates, maintaining a high hiring bar, and helping evolve the hiring process. Support onboarding and create an environment where engineers can do their best work.
  • Help build a team with a strong focus on developer experience, productivity tooling, and platform thinking.
  • Manage, mentor, and support a team of engineers, helping them grow in their careers and deliver high-impact work. Foster a culture of ownership, collaboration, and accountability, with a strong emphasis on developer empathy; treating internal engineers as customers.
  • Act as a force multiplier by improving team processes, reducing friction, and enabling more efficient and effective development workflows. Encourage experimentation with AI-assisted development practices.
  • Drive strong execution practices, including sprint planning, prioritization, and stakeholder communication. Continuously improve the speed and safety of the software delivery lifecycle while maintaining high reliability.
  • Ensure your team operates effectively in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment while reducing cognitive load for engineers and maintaining high standards for quality, security, and reliability.
  • Own and improve the end-to-end developer experience across the organization, including local development, testing, deployment, and observability workflows. Identify and eliminate friction in the developer journey, and introduce tools and systems that accelerate development velocity. Lead the adoption of AI-assisted development workflows, including code generation, debugging, testing, and operational tooling.
  • Partner with engineering teams to ensure these tools are effectively integrated into day-to-day workflows and deliver measurable impact.
