About The Position

Padre Dam Municipal Water District is seeking a motivated, curious, and hardworking Engineering Intern to join their team. This is an exciting opportunity for students pursuing a career in engineering to gain hands-on experience, learn from experienced professionals, and contribute to projects that support essential water, wastewater, and recycled water services for their community. The Engineering Intern will work within the District's Engineering Department, which is comprised of two divisions: Development Services and Capital Improvement Projects (CIP). The Development Services Division is responsible for reviewing development plans and assisting developers, engineers, and property owners through planning, approval, and installation of new water, sewer, and recycled water facilities. The Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) Division is responsible for the planning, design, and construction of Padre Dam's capital projects. This division manages infrastructure projects efficiently and effectively to ensure District standards are met while maintaining budget and schedule objectives. As an Engineering Intern, you will gain practical experience in public sector engineering and learn how water and wastewater infrastructure projects are planned, designed, reviewed, and constructed. This opportunity provides firsthand exposure to how engineering work directly improves environmental stewardship and quality of life within the community. The District provides water, wastewater, recycled water and park and recreation services to over 100,000 residents in the East San Diego County communities of Santee, El Cajon, Lakeside, Flinn Springs, Harbison Canyon, Blossom Valley, Alpine, Dehesa and Crest. Their infrastructure is worth over $700 million and they have an annual budget of $76.3 million. Successful candidates will be invited to interview early to mid July 2026.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of mathematical concepts, including Algebra, Analytical Geometry and Trigonometry.
  • Ability to read and interpret geographical data.
  • Computer skills using Microsoft Office Software on a Windows Operating System.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Time-management skills.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and organize work to meet deadlines.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to be tactful and professional with other agencies, contractors and the public as applicable.
  • Currently pursuing a degree in engineering or a related field.
  • High School Diploma or GED.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and support routine technical engineering tasks related to the Development Services and CIP Divisions.
  • Research information for water, recycled water, and sewer projects.
  • Work with customer inquiries about water and sewer service applications.
  • Perform easement checks.
  • Handle construction meters.
  • Draft by hand or using District software.
  • Monitor private development applications.
  • Provide preliminary engineering support for CIP staff.
