About The Position

The role of the Engineering Intern is designed to offer hands-on experience in the field of water and wastewater utilities engineering. The intern will have the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world projects under the supervision, guidance, and mentorship of experienced engineering staff. This is a part-time, temporary, contract position. Incumbents work less than 1000 hours per fiscal year.

Requirements

  • Principles and techniques for working with groups and fostering effective team interaction to ensure teamwork is conducted smoothly.
  • Methods and techniques of applying advanced mathematics principles to engineering work.
  • Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed.
  • Hydraulic system analysis and calculations.
  • Applying policies, procedures, and standards to projects.
  • Principles and practices of using a geographical information system (GIS)
  • Record keeping principles and procedures.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and maps.
  • A recent college graduate or a student with or working towards a degree in: Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Construction Engineering/Management, Water Resources Engineering or Engineering Management.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using GIS is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design and analysis of water and wastewater engineering projects, including potable water storage and delivery, wastewater collection, and water resources.
  • Utilize GIS to contribute to project planning and design.
  • Assist in the analysis of water and/or wastewater data.
  • Shadow supervisor and other departmental employees to learn about programs and operational aspects of the Utilities Department.
  • Enter data in a computerized management system (CMMS) for work orders.
  • Review and comment on less complex engineering plans for conformance to building regulations.
  • Calculating water and sewer flows and capacities.
  • Update and maintains various engineering maps and records.
  • Assist with engineering permit processing.
