Engineering Intern – Materials & Resin Development

SprintRay•Huntington Beach, CA
•$20 - $23•Onsite

About The Position

SprintRay’s Biomaterial Innovation Lab is seeking an Engineering Intern to support the development of next-generation dental 3D printing resins for DLP and LCD printing platforms. This hands-on, on-site lab role contributes to resin formulation, print process evaluation, post-processing studies, and material characterization. The intern will work closely with a cross-functional team to generate data, troubleshoot performance issues, and accelerate iteration on new resin systems. The internship is based in Huntington Beach, California. The posting lists a three-month duration and notes that candidates must be able to work on-site for the full internship term, described as 3–6 months. Compensation is $22–$23 per hour.

Requirements

  • A completed or in-progress bachelor’s degree in Biomedical, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a closely related field.
  • Ability to work on-site in Huntington Beach, California, for the full internship term.
  • Hands-on lab experience, academic or industry, in materials, polymers, chemistry, formulation, or testing.
  • Comfort working with data and documentation, including Excel or Google Sheets and basic plotting or analysis.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with photopolymers, resin chemistry, polymers, or composites.
  • Familiarity with DLP and/or LCD printing workflows and parameter optimization, including exposure, layer thickness, and supports.
  • Experience with characterization tools such as a viscometer or rheometer, FTIR, DSC/DMA, or mechanical test frames.
  • Interest in digital dentistry, dental materials, or medical device R&D.
  • Exposure to regulated development environments, such as ISO 13485 or GMP.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with photopolymer resin formulation, including mixing, batching, additive screening, pigmentation, and process controls.
  • Support experimental planning and design-of-experiments to evaluate formulation and process variables.
  • Run DLP and LCD 3D printing trials to assess printability, cure response, feature fidelity, accuracy, and surface quality.
  • Evaluate process windows, including exposure settings, layer thickness, build orientation, and supports, and document outcomes.
  • Support post-processing optimization, including cleaning and washing, UV curing, and thermal treatments as applicable, and quantify impacts on properties.
  • Perform materials testing and characterization on resins and printed samples, including viscosity and rheology, cure behavior or degree of cure as applicable, mechanical properties, dimensional accuracy, shrinkage, stability, and visual or optical properties as applicable.
  • Analyze and summarize data and maintain clear lab documentation, including notebooks, protocols, reports, and traceable datasets.
  • Collaborate with engineers and scientists to troubleshoot issues and propose improvements.
  • Follow lab safety procedures and quality practices applicable to medical device development.

Benefits

  • Hands-on experience developing and validating dental 3D printing resin materials for DLP/LCD platforms.
  • Mentorship from a multidisciplinary team across materials, process, and device development.
  • Opportunity to contribute to new products and workflows in a fast-moving digital dentistry environment.
