About The Position

Leidos Gibbs & Cox is seeking a college student Intern for our Philadelphia, PA office. We are seeking a candidate to work with our engineering team in all aspects of ship design. Leidos Gibbs & Cox’s experience encompasses preliminary and contract-level design package development, to detail design and engineering, production design, and through-life support. As an independent naval architecture and marine engineering firm, the Company employs engineers, designers, and analysts from all of the traditional engineering disciplines including naval architecture, propulsion, mechanical/auxiliaries, structural, electrical; as well as program, administrative and financial management. This broad spectrum of capability allows Gibbs & Cox, Inc. to provide fully integrated and engineered solutions to the most challenging design problems. The Company has participated on numerous industry design and engineering teams and has contributed to ongoing, hull mechanical and electrical research and development activities.

Requirements

  • Academically eligible undergraduate or graduate student in good standing at an accredited college or university working towards a Bachelor's or Master's level degree.
  • Must have the ability to work from the Philadelphia office up to 3 days a week.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain a broad understanding of all phases of ship design and engineering.
  • Learn about the involvement of stakeholders in the design, such as client and/or regulatory agency.
  • Learn about requirements trace, verification and validation.
  • Learn about coordination between disciplines.
  • Learn about production of quality products including configuration control.
  • Learn about development of studies to detail design calculations and drawings.
  • Learn about the importance or risk reduction.
  • Learn how cutting-edge technology is incorporated into the design, such as space, weight and services reservations to coordination of concurrent designs with manufacturers.
  • Always be looking for cost effective designs to reduce manning through automation, meet pollution control legislature requirements, improve safety, and reduce construction, operation and maintenance costs.
  • Obtain hands-on experience by working on real tasks supporting engineers within their area of interest, as well as working directly with engineers in other disciplines.
  • Depending on work load, have the opportunity to work on various ship types of ships in various phases of design as well as development of alteration packages for ships already in service.
