About The Position

The Vehicle Mechatronic Embedded Controls (VMEC) team within GM’s Software and Services organization is responsible for developing, deploying, and releasing control software and calibrations that control the whole vehicle. This includes internal combustion engines, hybridized drive units & transmissions, high voltage batteries, or chassis & thermal management. There are multiple opportunities in the Chassis Controls organization within VMEC to be an Engineering Group Manager leading a team of engineers responsible for executing a specific area of embedded development, including control software design, development and deployment, or system calibration, system test and validation. These teams work cross-functionally with product, systems, and program teams to ensure all pieces come together to successfully release quality products on time to support GM's broad vehicle product portfolio. In this people leader role, in addition to responsibilities for specific areas of technology, you will help develop and lead strategic action plans to support business goals for GM's inclusive future as it reinvents itself from an auto manufacturer to a tech company. The core of this position is to embrace agile practices that will enable team growth for the future with a focus on speed, quality, and safety. You will use agile concepts to empower your team to innovate and grow technology. Your technical leadership will be at the strategic direction level with responsibilities for execution. You will help develop and lead strategic action plans to support business goals for GM's inclusive future with industry-leading chassis controls performance that elevate the customer’s driving experience. This role involves identifying and leading staffing initiatives for a work team, conducting regularly scheduled group meetings, communicating GM policies and procedures, leadership and safety messages, and crafting specific to function communication on vision and strategy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics or a related technical degree.
  • Minimum of 7 years of professional engineering/technical experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of engineering experience related to embedded control system, calibration, related hardware, and/or safety critical system development.
  • Demonstrated technical background in chassis controls and/or vehicle dynamics.
  • Demonstrated results in successful project execution.
  • Excellent multi-functional communication and leadership skills - able to get multiple teams moving in the same direction.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with ambiguity while driving timely decision making.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and the ability to operate test vehicles.

Nice To Haves

  • Master of Science in Engineering and/or Master of Business Administration.
  • Master of Science in Electrical, Computer, Mechanical, Mechatronic, Aerospace, Systems or Software Engineering with emphasis in Controls or Robotics.
  • Experience in chassis controls development.
  • Leadership experience developing or utilizing industry standards.
  • Leadership experience in safety compliance of embedded systems.
  • Leadership of teams of engineers responsible for developing or testing embedded control systems or related hardware in an agile environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results through effective teamwork, lead numerous projects with different focal areas to successful completion, and manage and measure work through metrics, data, and results.
  • Experience managing a global team that is geographically dispersed.
  • Working knowledge of embedded controls development tool set – (e.g. IBM Rational Tool Suite, Jira/Jama, Git ecosystem, MATLAB-Simulink, ETAS).
