The Role As an Automation Execution Engineering Group Manager, you will manage a team that is responsible to design, build and install state of the art conveyance systems in our Vehicle Assembly Plants. Your team will be responsible to hire and manage the Controls contractors that will install and productionize our Body and General Assembly equipment and tooling. This will include such items as Robots and welding equipment, sealer dispense and Vision systems, fluid fill, roll test equipment, robotic vision glass install cells and numerous torque guns and fixtures. You will be part of a group of engineers and technical support personnel engaged in determining and specifying how the product is to be manufactured. You will also be responsible for all aspects of the development and evaluation of your GM employee team, including goal setting, mentoring, workplace of choice strategies, driving an inclusive environment and safety initiatives. In addition, you will lead all hiring initiatives for your team. The work your team will perform involves a considerable amount of creativity and perception and a high level of independent discernment in making decisions. This includes a constant focus on developing and improving standardized work to increase the productivity of the GM team members who operate and maintain the equipment you procure and install. Your work team will also be responsible to develop the plan for long term sustainment of the equipment in the plants you support. To complete these tasks, significant business travel to the remote plants will be required. Some of this work needs to be complete during plant downtimes, so work on holidays and shutdowns will be required.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in Manufacturing/Manufacturing Engineering, with experience in launch execution, engineering design and build, project management.
  • Strong controls engineering background with extensive knowledge of GM controls engineering standards such as GCCH, GCCS, Networks, safety systems and associated body shop templates and references.
  • Extensive knowledge of automation system integration, reverification, and validation procedures.
  • Extensive knowledge of vehicle manufacturing processes and operations, and knowledge of Manufacturing Engineering roles and responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of the ME organization and NAAX standardized work.
  • High level of analytical skill with proven ability to solve technical problems, with demonstrated professional performance in related area(s).
  • High level of interpersonal skill required to lead engineers and collaborate with BIW and General Assembly managers.
  • Domestic (North America) travel is required.

Responsibilities

  • Execution of NA Regional Launches – Staffing and management of the Automation launch team including planning, integration, validation and productionizing responsibilities.
  • Manage NA Automation Execution Budget – Prepare, monitor, and adjust department budgets for overtime and travel.
  • Support the HRM process - Develop bench strength and support employee career development.
  • Complete annual CAP process for all direct reports, including CPDT.
  • Interface with and provide input to BIW and GA process development groups as they create new iterations of the BOE for a specific program/plant launch.
  • Provide efficient and coordinated management of controls engineering resources across Body Shop and General Assembly.
  • Ensure direct reports are trained and fully competent in all required technical areas as well as safety processes such as lock-out, ESWP, and MPS validation.
  • Incorporate lessons learned and cost savings initiatives into controls standards, template designs, ASL references, and NAAX execution handbook.
